Special Guest – Annette McCleave on ‘Single Authorhood’

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

MamaWriters are excited to have my friend and paranormal romance author Annette McCleave with us today!  Her second book, BOUND BY DARKNESS, has just released, and is garnering wonderful reviews. such as her 4 1/2 star Romantic Times review, which said, “An emotional read…full of suspense and danger…”

Please help us welcome Annette McCleave!

Single Authorhood

Being an author who is a single parent is both a blessing and a challenge. On one hand, working from home and having a flexible schedule means I can attend almost every band performance and school play.

On the other, it means when deadline time rolls around, my daughter is on her own for long stretches of time. Fortunately, my daughter is a young teen now and she can entertain herself. She’s also perfectly happy to eat take-out when mom doesn’t have time to cook.

Being a teen is hard. Between the raging hormones and the social issues, weathering the high school years can be tough. Finding your place in the world is overwhelming. But my decision to become an author has opened the door for a discussion with my teen that I wish my own parents had shared with me—the importance of holding on to your dreams.

I don’t know about you, but my parents lectured me repeatedly about getting a good job, being financially stable and setting goals that were achievable. Dreams never entered into the mix. But dreams sustain us—they are the underpinnings of hope.

My daughter has seen me give up a corporate career in favour of a less stable, lower-paying job, and she knows that chasing your dreams has a price. The flip side of that is she knows a well-paying job and a nice house don’t necessarily equate happiness. She’s also seen me work hard, persist, and eventually triumph. Dreams really can come true.

Because it’s just the two of us, she’s shared every part of the journey and the excitement.  Every time I release a new book, as I did last week, she’s right there with me, beaming at the cover on the shelf. She even invited me to speak to her class about being an author. Truth is, if the only lesson she learns from me is to never give up on her dreams, I’ll be one very happy single parent.

It’ll make up for all the guilt. :- )

My daughter’s favourite moms-on-deadline meal is Chinese food. Do you have a favorite emergency dinner in your family? What is it?
If you’re interested in learning more about the book I released last week, Bound by Darkness, stop by my website. I’m running a release contest until the end of May, so be sure to check out the details.

Special Guest – NY Times & USA Today Bestselling Author Alyssa Day

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

MamaWriters as thrilled to have Alyssa Day with us today!  Her Warriors of Poseidon books have been hitting the lists left and right, and her  latest release, ATLANTIS REDEEMED, another sexy suspenseful paranormal released just last week.  Alyssa does it all with two kids, a Navy warrior husband, and a great number of Pugs.

Please help us welcome Alyssa Day!

Number Two Pencils

alesiahollidayToday I spent the morning at my daughter’s school proctoring one of those state-mandated standardized tests for a fifth-grade class.  At each desk, next to the dreaded text booklet, sat two freshly sharpened number two pencils.

It brought back a lot of memories.

I was one of those dorky, nerdy, (though we didn’t call it that then) brainy kids who loved the annual trip to the school supply school. Pencils and notebooks represented all of the stories as yet unwritten; the ideas as yet undreamed.  Still today, I am like a kid in a candy shop in the office supply store.  I probably own more post-it notes and markers and pens and pencils and notepads, in more different colors (ooh! Shiny!) than the law allows.  Ask most writers, from what my friends tell me, and you’ll find the same.  We’re all entranced with new journals, and pens, and shiny little objects to fill up our bookshelves and desk drawers.

They’re tools, of course, weapons in the writer’s arsenal, but they’re more than that.  They’re the freshly sharpened means to a magical end—the wonderful worlds and fully developed characters and emotionally resonant stories we create in the fascinating nooks and crannies of our writers’ brains.  But since (unfortunately, how cool would that be??) we can’t dump our brain against a computer screen and have the stories appear, we sharpen our pencils, fire up the laptop, pull out a notebook, and get to work.

Creating the impossible. Dreaming the dream.  Writing the stories that shape our novels.  The act of creation should be the joy, too, not simply the satisfaction of writing THE END.  The journey, to go a little Zen writer on you, should be the thing.  Just you and the blank page and that freshly sharpened pencil.

So there I was.  Surrounded by all of those wonderful young minds, focusing so intently, writing frantically and chewing on the eraser tips when book_redeemed_150they paused.  What was a writer to do?  I picked up my own pencil and began a new story.  I didn’t use these exact words, but mine meant the very same thing:

Once upon a time . . .

May all your endings be happy, and all your number two pencils be freshly sharpened.

Hugs,

Alyssa

[UPDATE: And that winner is . . Pat McDermott!    Enjoy the fabulosity of Veronica's recent release, Pat, and thanks for chiming in at the MamaWriters playground! ]

So please help us welcome Veronica Wolff!

veronica wolffContemplating today’s blog topic came on the heels of one of my Worst Weeks Ever.

I’d felt much like Jack Bauer on 24, except my terrors are around 4’ tall and, instead of bullets, I raced around dodging things like spilled milk, pencil shavings, and various animal excreta.

The following events took place the week of October 31, 2009.

1.     Mommy eyes 11/1 deadline with wary confidence.

2.     Decidedly un-crafty Mommy stays up late sewing “Headless Horseman” costume for seven-year old son.

3.     Informed the next morning that costume does not resemble “Scooby Doo Headless Horseman” and therefore doesn’t count as valid costume.

4.     Mommy eyes 11/1 deadline with wary…wariness.

5.     Mommy whisks daughter to ER after bizarre playground accident.  (Daughter all better now.  Mommy decides new gray hairs will look dignified.)

6.     Page proofs arrive.  “Yay!  Love seeing the proofs!” quickly followed by “Doh!  That means two deadlines this week…”

7.     Mommy eyes 11/1 deadline with fear.

8.     Mommy re-tackles “Headless Horseman” despite urging from friends and family that task is impossible.

9.     New book about to hit shelves!  Another “SQUEE/doh” moment as realization hits…there is a book signing the night of 10/29, lord-of-the-highlandsmediumoverdue interviews, and one upcoming talk to prepare for…

10. Mommy keeps son home from school with cough that won’t go away.

11. Phone call from school!  Mommy forgot daughter’s field trip permission slip; bus is about to leave; daughter is sobbing in office; can Mommy get there in five minutes before bus pulls out?

12. Mommy now looking at deadline with twitchy eye.

13. Book, proofs, costumes…DONE!  So what that one of the above morphed into The Hunchback of Notre Dame by the end of it all?

14. Mommy caps off week with a bottle of wine and an appalling number of bite-size Butterfingers.

15. Lather, rinse, repeat.

My dear fellow Mommies, I know I really should ask you some serene and reflective questions like: What do you do to keep focused amidst the chaos?  Or, how do you manage to find balance in your busy life?

But you know what? Screw that!!  Jack Bauer wouldn’t reflect.  Jack Bauer would VENT!

So have at it—tell me about one of your craziest times!

Writing from the Heart & Bewitching You Release Day!!

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Thrusting your heart and soul into your work. It doesn’t happen every day. Not with every single sentence I write. But it happened several times when I was writing Bewitching You.

I remember sitting at my laptop and laughing out loud as my characters bantered back and forth. And I remember writing a scene or two where tears burned my eyes because the emotions were so intense. Does that sound nuts? I’m sitting here writing this and wondering if people are going to think I’m a little off kilter.

Don’t worry. I usually write when there’s no one around. No one can hear me cackling away, punching at keys. No one sees me tearing up as I stare at my words on the screen.

At least I hope not. Maybe my family is storing away the straight jacket for the perfect moment when I’m not looking.

Seriously though, the one great thing about putting my heart into a book is that the reader will benefit from this. Hopefully, anyway. If I’m feeling the emotion as I write it, there’s a better chance the reader will feel the emotion as she’s reading it. If a scene is lacking emotion, then it’s too dry, too boring. Right?

So I guess there’s a method to my madness. Put away the straight jacket, guys. I’m acting nutty for a good reason. I’m bringing characters to life, creating a story people will be able to relate with.

I’m writing from the heart.

Today is the official release day for Bewitching You. It’s now available in eBook and paperback. AND today I’m giving away a free eBook copy to a random commenter over at http://www.liaslater.blogspot.com , if you want to check it out. I have an excerpt over there, as well. 18 & over, please!

Hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween!

Angel Vindicated Release Day!?!?!

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Today I’m celebrating my very first release date the only way I know how. So if you see me, don’t worry about my deep breaths and praying hands. And in between those, just excuse the clapping and cheering. (I’ve never been a cheerleader. It won’t be pretty). Going back and forth from terrified to ecstatic is exhausting, but so worth it!

Here’s a little more about what’s causing me such angst:

angelvindicated_cover_halfsizeAngel Vindicated (I like to call it a sexy urban fantasy) is now available as an eBook from www.cerridwenpress.com!!!!!!

Deep breath. Yay!!

Blurb:

Abby Angel may not enjoy being a law enforcement Angel for Demon Control, a branch of Angels Inc, but she excels at it. Deporting unruly demons back to Hell is her specialty. Her personal life, on the other hand, could use a little work. The virtuous and pristine genes seem to be missing in this particular Angel, getting Abigail in trouble more than she likes to admit. To date, her biggest vice has been Simeon Keller, a half demon/half human, who effortlessly managed to seduce Abigail five years ago. She’s avoided him ever since but she still can’t seem to knock the bad reputation the blunder has branded on her.

Now, the threat of a demon rebellion has Angels, Inc overwhelmed, and Abby must trust Simeon to help her find and deport the fiends who are attempting to destroy earth’s only salvation. Staying out of Simeon’s bed is the least of her worries as she fights for her life and the lives of all Angels and humans everywhere.

Excerpt:

“I’m leaving. I really shouldn’t be around you anymore.”

“You’re attracted to me too. Why can’t you admit it?” It wasn’t really a question though. He knew. He braced my waist and drew me toward him. “Oh, wait. I know. If you admit you desire a half-breed, then you’re somehow admitting you’re inadequate. Right?”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” I lied. He couldn’t be more right.

“Because you believe half-breeds are inferior and not worth an Angel’s time or affection. Is that it, Abigail?”

His lips were so close to mine, his warm breath lingered at my nose, reminding me of the delicious taste of his mouth. I sniffed the aroma in and gulped it down. Pathetic. Really, really pathetic.

With whatever brain cells I had left I muttered, “I have to go. Now.”

“Of course.”

Before I knew what was happening next I was being escorted to the elevator. His hand was on my back as he gently guided me along the hardwood floor. I couldn’t hear his shoes but mine were squeaking noisily, covering the sound of Harley’s continuous keyboard tapping.

Such a stupid thing to concentrate on, Abby.

He pressed the down button and turned me by my shoulders so he could look at my face. “Be careful,” he whispered. “Peter Piper isn’t dangerous by himself but he’s idiotic enough to follow someone who is. Do you understand?”

“Why don’t you give me more information then?” I was surprised he’d come to that conclusion by simply looking at Piper’s file. What kind of notes did this guy take? And how could I get my hands on them?

“Have dinner with me tonight and we can discuss it.”

“I wouldn’t even if I could.”

“You’re working?”

I didn’t answer. I may have wanted to lick whipped cream off his body but I didn’t trust him to know any more about me than he already did.

“Lunch tomorrow, then?”

“Not going to happen.”

He drew in an annoyed breath and pulled a business card out of thin air. “Take this. Call me if you change your mind, day or night. Or if you feel like you might be attacked again.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “What would you do about it?”

“Prevent it from happening, of course.”
