On a Positive Note

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

The last time I posted here at Mama Writers I blogged about taking the higher road and some of the negative things in life one has to ignore/deal with/fight about/whatever. And I realized that I might’ve sounded a little negative myself. A little whiney. A little poor-me. You get the point. I was having a bad day. In the wise lyrics of Daniel Powter, I needed to sing a sad song just to turn it around.

Anyhoo, I’m all better now and I want to get back to the more optimistic aspects of life because they’re overlooked way too often:

A husband and four sons who always give me that much needed hug, make me laugh, or laugh at my jokes. You know it’s love when someone understands your sense of humor…and still likes it.

Friends who cheer me along when something amazing happens and rant with me when something not-so-great happens.

A mother with whom I can have an in-depth conversation about The Bachelor. There’s nothing like reality TV to bond a family together.

A sister who buys multiple copies of my books and supports me in anything I do. And all my other family members who support me as well.

Teachers who go above and beyond to make sure my children get the best education possible. They’re heroes to be cherished.

The strangers I see in the store who smile for no reason, or who are just all-around polite people.

The driver who stays a safe distance behind my car when I’m driving in the snow, or the one who’s smart enough not to try to use his/her cell phone.

I’m sure I’m forgetting so, so many people who make my life easier and happier. But believe me when I say that I appreciate you!

So tell me who’s made a positive impact in your life lately?

Taking the High Road??

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Rudeness. Negativity. Unprofessional behavior. Bitchiness. Jealousy. Whatever you want to call it—it’s everywhere.

You wave at the neighbor lady down the way and she gives you the evil eye. Again.

You’re driving down the highway, going the speed limit like a good girl, and some dude rides your bumper for half a mile, swerves around you, then gives you the bird as if YOU were the one being a complete nimrod.

You log onto Facebook, MySpace, insert-favorite-method-of-procrastination-here, and you notice that someone has left you a not-so-friendly comment for everyone to see.

One of the mom’s on the school’s PTO never returns a smile but doesn’t hesitate to drop her scrutinizing gaze to your sweatpants and sandals.

The server at the restaurant is flirting with the table of men and ignoring you and your hubby.

You just found out that your frenemy has been gossiping about you again.

Your least favorite relative just called to tell you how unimpressed they are with your life—with their witty, dry humor, of course. He/she’s just joking, don’t you know?

The list goes on and on. At times, it’s enough to make you want to cry/scream/punch a wall/honk your horn/curse/insert-means-of-expressing-hurt-or-anger-here. Dealing with negativity is frustrating and sometimes it can be overwhelming.

Can’t we all just get along? No?

Okay, maybe that’s too much to ask. I’ve learned rude behavior is a fact of life, whether it’s intentional or unintentional, we have to deal with it on a daily basis. It sucks, I know. Trust me. No two people are alike and we’re bound to clash once in a while. But something that I’m always mulling over is when is it appropriate to fight back and when should I take the higher road and let it go? Allow karma to catch up with the jerks or secretly wish for lightning to crash from the sky and reduce them to ashes? Or just shrug your shoulders and accept that certain people are the way they are for a reason.

Who knows? Maybe the woman who won’t return a smile doesn’t have the best life, therefore doesn’t have a reason to smile. Maybe the reason that neighbor lady is mad because your son rode his bike through her yard last summer. Hmm…

We all have our limits, exceptions, reasons, whatever. And I have absolutely no solution or sage advice to help us all get along. Sorry. I’ve always tried my best to take the higher road but there are times when you just can’t let it slide. Sometimes you have to fight back. For your honor and self-respect. One can only be pushed around so much, right?

I’d love to know how you deal with rudeness, bitchiness, gossip, negativity, and that guy who flips you off for driving the speed limit. Are you one to choose your battles wisely? Are you a kind of a pushover? Do you bite back? Do you put people “in their place”? Curse? Bow out gracefully? Do you take the higher road?

Or tell me a situation that made you want to punch a wall…or at least a pillow? I’m all ears.

Why Not?

Monday, December 7th, 2009

On Friday the lovely Sarah blogged about inspiration coming from unlikely places and it got me thinking about my journey as a writer. I’m somewhat of a timid person (ahem). I’m a quiet observer for the most part, not someone who enjoys being the center of attention. Yet I’ve gone out of my way to write stories—stories written from my very own heart and soul for the world to read, judge, and hopefully enjoy. To get there I faced multiple rejections, entered my work in contests, braved good and bad feedback, and ultimately put my neck on the line like I’ve never done before. Ever.

What really inspired this ambition? And what kept me going despite all the heartache that comes along with the Yellow Brick Road to Publication?

There were so many occasions in the beginning where I doubted myself. How could I, a simple stay-at-home mother of four, become a published author?

It wasn’t until someone asked me “why not?” that I started questioning my doubts. I tried to come up with excuses as to why this dream will never happen for me. I whipped out the tears and had a grand ole pity party. Why not?? I’ll tell you why not…

Until I realized my excuses were really lame. Every one of them. My own self-defeating behavior was the real culprit. If I wanted to attempt this journey then what or who could stop me? I’d discovered a passion in me and it couldn’t be contained. I wanted to write stories and I wanted people to read them. It was simple enough.

So I searched for more inspiration. I needed proof that I could do this, something tangible that I could look at day after day. And I came across a quote that literally changed my way of thinking. A quote! Can you believe that? It truly inspired me to get off the pity-party wagon and persevere. If I wanted to be a writer, then I’d be a writer, damn it.

Here’s the quote that I found and have hung on the wall by my computer:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.  Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves in too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”

I’d thought that this quotation was from Goethe but on further research I found out that it’s actually only partly by him. You can read more about it here: http://www.goethesociety.org/pages/quotescom.html

Talk about inspiration from an unlikely place. I can’t say this was the only thing that pushed me. I was also lucky enough to have a support system of fabulous friends and family. But sometimes it takes a little extra something to make you go aha! Know what I mean?angelvindicated_cover1

So tell me about something that you helped you get to that aha! moment? Or what’s holding you back from getting there? Come one, I want to hear some really lame excuses!

Get Me Out Of My Head

Monday, November 9th, 2009

My mind is a very busy place. It never stops and sometimes it gets a little cluttered with worries, doubts, fears or plans of what I need to do next. When I’m not plotting out the next scene in my book, I’m wondering what to make for dinner. I’m worrying about how my kids are doing in school. I’m fretting about my messy house. The laundry that needs to be done. The edits that are due to my editor. The manuscript that I haven’t finished because I just can’t figure out where to go with it. The book that’s already out that I haven’t promoted enough because I just don’t have enough time in the day. The reviews. The absence of reviews. The blog that’s due the next day that I haven’t starting writing yet.

Deep breath. It’s times like these that I have to remember to relax. But how? How do you do it? I’ve learned there are a few things that help me unwind. And, believe me, unwinding is very important for all mamas, whether you’re a writer or not.

Here are some ideas:

1.      Push back away from your work and give yourself permission to take a break.

2.      Take the dog for a walk around the block or get in your car and drive. Blast the radio and sing along. Who cares what that woman in the car next to you thinks?

3.      Make a lunch date with a friend or with your hubby. This is especially important for moms who work from home or stay home with the little ones.

4.      Cry. Or laugh hysterically for no reason in particular. Make weird noises. Jog around the house singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Turn on Oprah and let the tears flow. Seriously. The world won’t end if you let yourself crumble for a few moments.

5.      Remember that you’re human. Superwoman is a fictitious character. And so are super models, by the way.

6.      Forgive yourself for the mistakes you’ve made and are going to make. Nobody is perfect.

7.      Get one task done and out of the way. I find it discouraging to work on multiple tasks at the same time only to leave them all unfinished at the end of the day. I have an easier time patting myself on the back if I complete one task fully. Like writing a certain number of words for the day or completing edits for a certain number of pages.

8.      Clean. I know, I hate cleaning too. I wish the housecleaning fairies would sweep in daily and make the clutter go away. But, sadly, reality doesn’t work that way. Sometimes I need to see that the house is in decent shape before I can relax.

9.      Take up a hobby or a craft. I’ve found that making book thongs is very therapeutic.

10. Read a book. For fun!! What a concept. Allow yourself to escape into a good book and don’t study or criticize the pace, word choice, plot, editing or lack thereof, or…well, you know what I’m talking about. Fall in love with reading. Fall in love with the characters. And let your mind go on a journey.

There. The blog is complete and I have one thing done and out of the way. *Patting my back*

So, tell me what do you to get out of your head?
