What I’ve Learned

Monday, June 28th, 2010

MamaWriters is coming to an end—for now. This is my very last post here and, as in life, if something I love ends—like a relaxing vacation that ends too quickly, a good friend who moves out of state or a brilliant book that leaves me wanting more—I try to look on the positive side, savor the memories, and remember all that I’ve gained from the experience. All that I’ve learned.

You might be wondering what the heck I could’ve learned from a blog written by a bunch of moms who just happen to be tackling one of the most difficult and challenging careers on the planet. From home!

A Trip Of A Lifetime!

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Aloha, Mama Writers!

Where We Stayed: The Waikiki Marriot

I’ve been a bad, bad girl. I snuck away for five days and four nights of paradise! My darling hubby took me along with on his business trip to Oahu, Hawaii!

We left the kiddos with my mom, so I had plenty of “ME Time” while hubs worked. It was pure bliss to be able to eat at a restaurant and not be whisper-yelling, “Stop that!” or “Will you just sit still!” I actually ate a whole meal while it was still HOT. Talk about awesome!

One of the highlights of my trip was connecting with a fellow lover of romance novels. When I made mention of my upcoming trip to my good friend, Diana Cosby, she put me in contact with a lovely lady named, Kim, who just happened to live on the island. How cool, huh?!

Every plant or tree had flowers

As soon as hubs and I landed and got settled in the hotel, I called Kim and we made plans to meet. The two of us had a blast driving up and down the H1 Highway. It was wonderful to see the sights and chat about all things romance face-to-face instead of via email. Once my hubby concluded his business, Kim showed us various historical Pearl Harbor locations inside Hickman Air Force base. We got to see some of the original buildings, which still sported bullet holes, and the air field where all our planes were attacked. Plus, we got to view the USS Utah wreckage. An amazing and very humbling moment to be sure. I couldn’t begin to count the times I teared up throughout the day! I totally recommend a visit to the USS Arizona and Pearl Harbor Memorial. It will take your breath away.

Had I not been plugged into the Romance Community, my hubs and I would never have gotten the chance to experience such awe-inspiring  behind-the-scenes locals. What’s more, I wouldn’t have met Kim!!

Whether it was during a convention or while on vacation, when did being a part of the romance community enrich your life?

Mahalo everyone! If you’d like to see some more pics of my trip and find out which Project Runway Celeb I sat  next to on the plane over, swing by my blog, The Lovestruck Novice, on Monday!

Mama Likes Book Clubs

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Last night I went to my very first book club.  What a new experience!  I’ve been to romance writing chapter meetings, and I’ve talked about books I’ve read with friends, but never before have I talked with READERS in a group setting about different books they love, and why they love them.

Attending the club meeting was eye opening.  We writers tend to really focus on our characters’ GMC’s, the plot, the conflict, the action. And you know what?  It’s a darn good thing we do, because readers really focus on it too.

Here’s why I think all mamas, readers and writers should join a book club:

1.  For a few hours (this club meets once a month) you get out of the house, and meet up with some friends.

2.  Like minded people!  I LOVE LOVE LOVE books, so talking to other people about books, plots and characters is so much fun!

3.  A chance to read a good book.  I’ll look for any excuse to read a good book, now its almost mandatory!  You wouldn’t want to be the only one at the meeting who didn’t read it at all (at least read the first chapter! lol)

4.  As a writer its good to see what readers are looking for.

5.  Real adult conversations.  As a mother and a writer, the majority of my conversations are either with children or fake people, lol.  Probably why I talk my husband’s ear off when he gets home!  At the club meeting you get to sit with other adults and hold real conversations.

Do you belong to a book club?  Why do you like book clubs?

I’d also like to mention that if you can find a local chapter or writing group to join, that is an amazing experience as well.  Most meetings are once a month and at a time that is managable for a writing mama.

Check this out!  My 3rd novella, HER CAPTAIN DARES ALL, from my Men of the Sea Series released yesterday!  Read the blurb and click the link for an excerpt…

Pursued by kidnappers, Lady Tessa Woodward is running for her life. When handsome Captain Jeremy Williams comes to her rescue in the backstreets of Paris, she persuades him to help her escape France and return to her home in England.

Captain Jeremy Williams is captivated by Lady Tessa’s fiery nature and agrees to give her passage aboard his ship. Once on board, his desire grows and soon reveals a sensual side to the woman he can’t deny. But when danger threatens his lady, will the captain dare all to save her?

I’m now that kind of mom

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Yep, I am officially now that kind of mom.  The kind that welcomes my boys’ friends over after school, makes them some cookies and juice and then watches them head out to the backyard to play baseball.

My oldest has mentioned it a few times and then one weekend came home with the announcement that his friend was indeed going to call so he could go over to his house.  Well, we’re talking eight year olds here and they can’t quite grasp the concept that it isn’t exactly up to them when and if they can have friends over.  So, when the weekend passed and his friend didn’t call, it was difficult to explain that things didn’t always work out the way they planned and a lot of other stuff comes into play like what his friend’s parents had planned for the weekend etc.  So, that Monday morning I suggested that maybe he could get his friend’s telephone number and then I could call the mom and we could set something up.

Yep, that night I had a little scrap of blue construction paper with a penciled number on it.  I called the other mother up and we laughed at how cute it was the boys were trying to get together.  We happily set up a date for after school later that week at our house.

I still smile thinking about it and not just because it is so cute, but because I know how lucky my kids are.  I moved around a lot as a child–I think it was seven different elementary schools before we settled long enough for me to stay in the same highschool for the four years.  Don’t get me wrong, I had a great childhood, dad just moved a number of times for work or mom to have a new home to fix up.  The only thing I didn’t have was continuous friends.

I was trying to figure out which word to use there and ‘continuous’ was the only one that sort of fit.  We always had to leave our friends behind  and a couple letters were usually all that lasted of the relationship, so I didn’t have those friends that you meet on the first day of kindergarten, tell secrets too and buddy around with through at least your school career.

Now my boys do, and it just fills my heart every time I think of it.  I love on the odd days I pick them up from school (versus taking the schoolbus home)  that their friends wave or say hi or joke around with me.   And to now be at the age where they are old enough to ask for best friends to come over and play and goof off in the big backyard is just…well, cool.

So, there I was watching them through my office window (because heaven forbid if I hovered LOL), listening to the laughter and hilarious conversations of boys and friends, hitting balls and all around just having fun…just the way childhood should be.

And it’s only the beginning because now my younger son has asked for his friend over.

Yep, I’m going to like being this kind of mom.

On a Positive Note

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

The last time I posted here at Mama Writers I blogged about taking the higher road and some of the negative things in life one has to ignore/deal with/fight about/whatever. And I realized that I might’ve sounded a little negative myself. A little whiney. A little poor-me. You get the point. I was having a bad day. In the wise lyrics of Daniel Powter, I needed to sing a sad song just to turn it around.

Anyhoo, I’m all better now and I want to get back to the more optimistic aspects of life because they’re overlooked way too often:

A husband and four sons who always give me that much needed hug, make me laugh, or laugh at my jokes. You know it’s love when someone understands your sense of humor…and still likes it.

Friends who cheer me along when something amazing happens and rant with me when something not-so-great happens.

A mother with whom I can have an in-depth conversation about The Bachelor. There’s nothing like reality TV to bond a family together.

A sister who buys multiple copies of my books and supports me in anything I do. And all my other family members who support me as well.

Teachers who go above and beyond to make sure my children get the best education possible. They’re heroes to be cherished.

The strangers I see in the store who smile for no reason, or who are just all-around polite people.

The driver who stays a safe distance behind my car when I’m driving in the snow, or the one who’s smart enough not to try to use his/her cell phone.

I’m sure I’m forgetting so, so many people who make my life easier and happier. But believe me when I say that I appreciate you!

So tell me who’s made a positive impact in your life lately?
