A Trip Of A Lifetime!

Aloha, Mama Writers!

Where We Stayed: The Waikiki Marriot

I’ve been a bad, bad girl. I snuck away for five days and four nights of paradise! My darling hubby took me along with on his business trip to Oahu, Hawaii!

We left the kiddos with my mom, so I had plenty of “ME Time” while hubs worked. It was pure bliss to be able to eat at a restaurant and not be whisper-yelling, “Stop that!” or “Will you just sit still!” I actually ate a whole meal while it was still HOT. Talk about awesome!

One of the highlights of my trip was connecting with a fellow lover of romance novels. When I made mention of my upcoming trip to my good friend, Diana Cosby, she put me in contact with a lovely lady named, Kim, who just happened to live on the island. How cool, huh?!

Every plant or tree had flowers

As soon as hubs and I landed and got settled in the hotel, I called Kim and we made plans to meet. The two of us had a blast driving up and down the H1 Highway. It was wonderful to see the sights and chat about all things romance face-to-face instead of via email. Once my hubby concluded his business, Kim showed us various historical Pearl Harbor locations inside Hickman Air Force base. We got to see some of the original buildings, which still sported bullet holes, and the air field where all our planes were attacked. Plus, we got to view the USS Utah wreckage. An amazing and very humbling moment to be sure. I couldn’t begin to count the times I teared up throughout the day! I totally recommend a visit to the USS Arizona and Pearl Harbor Memorial. It will take your breath away.

From the beach at North Shore

Had I not been plugged into the Romance Community, my hubs and I would never have gotten the chance to experience such awe-inspiring  behind-the-scenes locals. What’s more, I wouldn’t have met Kim!!

Whether it was during a convention or while on vacation, when did being a part of the romance community enrich your life?

Mahalo everyone! If you’d like to see some more pics of my trip and find out which Project Runway Celeb I sat  next to on the plane over, swing by my blog, The Lovestruck Novice, on Monday!

What Makes a Romance Novel a Romance Novel?

Monday, April 12th, 2010

I had the most wonderful Sunday afternoon.   I had the opportunity to  participate in an Author Event at the Public Library in Englewood, Colorado.  Along with maybe fifty other authors, who write everything from children’s books to history to poetry, I sat at a table and visited with readers.

It was tremendous fun.  The library staff and volunteers are some of the best anywhere.  They went above and beyond to make all the authors feel welcome and wanted and they certainly put a tremendous amount of effort into setting up a lovely event for their library patrons.

So why am I telling you guys about this?  Simple.  In the midst of speaking to so many readers [of ALL types of books] I had one of those moments.  You know the ones… they challenge what we believe and what we think we know.

Yeah.  One of THOSE moments.

People attending were encouraged to visit all the authors  – to get a special stamp on their booklet which would get them an entry into the prize drawing!  As a result, I ended up chatting with lots of people who didn’t consider themselves Romance Readers.  Some indicated they’d read one years ago and just didn’t care for them.  Many people admitted [under prodding] that they’d never read one… but they just knew they wouldn’t care for ‘those’ kinds of books.

Really?

My standard follow-up questions –  What kinds of books do you like to read?  What are some of your favorites? — elicited some interesting answers:

I like books about relationships and how they develop.

     I like mysteries.

     I like fantasies.

I like books about people that are more realistic.

     I like exciting action stories.

Huh?  Those ARE Romance novels!  I patiently explained that Romance is such a broad, all-encompassing category these days that there’s an excellent chance, no matter what they like, they can find it in Romance.

Then what makes a Romance Novel a Romance Novel?

Great question.  And one I was so sure I knew the answer to, it simply rolled off my tongue.  It’s a book where you know your hero and heroine won’t die in the end; where you know they’ll have their happy ever after, or at least a ‘happy for now.’

But is that right?

I thought about the answer I’d given [over and over and over] all the way home.  I’d forgotten to tell them it’s also about the development of that relationship.  I’d forgotten to tell them it’s also about the story.  I’d forgotten… well, you get the point.  I’m sure there are lots of things I should have said in my attempt to lure all those poor, deprived non-Romance Readers over to the Light Side.  :-)

So, in preparations for the next time [and I know there WILL be a next time], I’m asking all of you for your opinions on the subject.

What do you think makes a Romance Novel a Romance Novel?

Getting Yourself Out There

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Knees knocking together, teeth chattering, hands wringing, sweat dripping down my back.  My stomach roiled in protest, I became light headed, nausea took over.  There was no way in hell I could do this.  No flipping way!

This was me in my Communications 101 class at UMD, every time I had to stand up to give a speech…

Do you fear public speaking?  Do you fear putting yourself out there?

My husband called me yesterday and said, “Why don’t you go outside today?  It’s beautiful.”  And he was right, the sun was shining, a slight breeze was blowing, and it was a lovely 68 degrees.  Perfect.  But then I thought, hmm… why is he suggesting this?  He teasingly replied, “You’re looking a little pale… You’ve been holed up with your computer for months!”

hercaptainsurrenders_w3647_300And he was right…  Just last week, he and my older daughter sat at the kitchen table pretending to type on their “computers” while saying things like, “Dear Fellow Bloggers…. today I…. (insert whatever mommy was doing–moment to moment).”  It was quite comical.

Okay, my point is, as writers, holed up with our computers, there is the blessed security blanket of anonymity.  We can work in our pjs, we don’t need makeup, heck, we could work in our birthday suits and no one would be the wiser.  As writers, most of us love the feeling of working by ourselves, living with our characters, plots, twists and turns, talking to our muse–who in an ideal world hangs on our every word.

The one side of writing we never consider when imagining our book covers, contract offers and the next story, is that we will have do some PR work.  Public relations.  Just saying it is scary.  Public–so out there and exposed!  Relations–this is interacting with people!!!  Interacting with people out in the open!  Yikes!

But we have to do it, not only for your own sanity and health, but because getting yourself out there, networking, you meet so many interesting people, gain new experiences and gain new readers.

I always tell writers, they should start doing things, even before they get “The Call” to put their name out there.  Establish a web presence:  website, blog, facebook, myspace, twitter, things like that.  Visit other people’s blogs, make comments.  Go to online chats.  While you’re getting your own name out there, you can study how other writers market themselves.  Join writing chapters–online and local (and volunteer within those chapters).  Write articles on topics that interest you.  Review books.  If you feel you are an expert in some area, try your hand at teaching a workshop.  Attend conferences–RWA Nationals, RomCon, RT Convention, and so many more!

The more of a presence you make, the more your name will stand out, the more people will remember you.  AND the more you get yourself out there, the easier it becomes.   As the saying goes, practice makes perfect!

Releasing later this year...TBA

Releasing later this year...TBA

This is true even for multi-published authors.  They have to put themselves out there and connect with readers–interviews, blogs, book signings, contest giveaways, newsletters.  There are so many different ways you can connect with your audience.

For those who are completely gun-shy of public appearances, with the internet today, you can visit, chat and PR yourself until you pass out without stepping outside.  But if you don’t try to step outside at least every once in awhile, you might get really pale… and you might have somebody saying “Dear Fellow Bloggers… Today, I write 1500 words, did some laundry and then made chicken.”

So tell me, how do you feel when putting yourself out into this wild world?  What do you do to market yourself?

Oh What a Tangled Web…

Good morning, fellow Mamas ~

First off, I’m thrilled to be here with you guys today.  It’s giving me something to do on my Release Day other than obsess over how the new book is doing!!! homecoming-cover

That’s right… it’s Official Release Day for A HIGHLANDER’S HOMECOMING, the sixth book in my Daughters of the Glen series.  Naturally, I’m hoping you’re all making plans even now to hurry down to your favorite local bookstore TODAY to pick up your very own copy!!  J

Meanwhile, back in the real world,  I’ve spent the last few days buried up to my elbows in my website.  Darn thing ALWAYS seems to need updating!  And every time I check it, I can’t believe how out of date it is!  Has it really been two months since I did this last???  Seems like just last week!!  J  And how did so much change in just two months?!?!  Every time I think it’s absolutely perfect, I find something else I want to change!

The whole process started me thinking…  And that led to some questions I’m bringing here to all the MamaWriters … and MamaReaders!!  Feel free to answer any that strike your fancy.  I’m just curious as to how far off the norm I really am!!!  J

Writers – how many of you do your own website updates?   And if you do use someone else, do you still have the ability to tweak your site when you want to add or change something?  Are you happy with the way you’re doing it now?   If not, what would you like to be able to do differently?

Readers – which pretty much takes us all in, now doesn’t it??? –  What do you like to see on the Home Page of an author’s website?  I know most of us don’t have much time to spend surfing our favorite author’s pages — we’d rather be reading their books!!  But when you do, what are you looking for?  Is there anything you find particularly annoying on authors’ websites?  And what sorts of things do you like to find buried in the meat of the site?

Personally, I like to see book lists right up front… especially newest and upcoming books.  Makes it so much easier for me to pre-order if I know what’s coming out from my favorite authors and when!

Okay, Mamas… I’ll be checking back today to see what you have to say.  For now, maybe I can distract myself with some mindless Twittering…  *sigh*

Blogging and Shaking it like its HAWT!!!!

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Whenever I sit down to write these blogs a number of ideas come through my mind, but I figure nobody cares about the number of diapers I’ve changed in the last three months (837),  the movies I watched this past weekend when I should have been writing, but was laid up with a cold (Year One, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, What Happens in Vegas) or the number of times I had to redo the Christmas lights around the railing of my deck because I couldn’t seem to get it just right (6).

But I did think you’d be interested in two things.  One: Zumba.  Two: Young bloggers.

Zumba, you say?  What the heck is Zumba?

It’s my new obsession and has my muse shaking it likes it hot.   I’ve always been a gym fanatic, love the gym!  But recently when I went back to working out after the baby (and gaining a ridiculous 60 pounds all in the last several months of my pregnancy….mmmm chocoalate…..)  I was bored!  I hated every minute of the treadmill.  I found myself dancing around at home so I had an excuse not to go to the gym.  Then I shoved the scaredy cat side of myself in the closet and went to a Zumba class.  Never have I had more fun working out!

Zumba’s motto is:  Ditch the workout, join the Party!  And it is so true!  It’s a mixture of salsa and hip-hop dancing.  Oh I can hear you now….  Don’t even!  I suck at dancing.  I’m certifiably the most uncoordinated woman on the planet.  We gave our first daughter the middle name Grace hoping she’d have more than me!  Have you ever seen Miss Congeniality? When Sandra Bullock walks out looking all hawt, and then falls on her face?  Yeah, that’s the type of grace I have-minus the hawt, lol.

On top of that, I’ve been droppin’ it likes it hot so much over the last couple weeks I’ve already lost inches.  I’m feeling more energy, the happy endorphins are literally flying through my veins, I’m feeling sexy…. AND the best part, the muse is being nurtured in a good way.  She’s rocking and rolling.

Try it!!!!

Okay now onto number 2: Young bloggers.

My daughter loves to write on the computer.  She has documents saved on her computer, My Writing.  She loves to email people. Very cute.  In her school, 3rd graders have a blog! (It’s safe, the teacher has to approve all comments, and runs the blogs himself–no personal info, things like that.)

Can you believe it?  Her assignment this week was to do a book review.  I am in Heaven!  It is so exciting to see her doing things like this since its what I do for a living.

I think it is so important to start nurturing that creative side as early as possible. In today’s day and age, we use electronics, computers, blogs, emails, etc… I’m blogging right now!  It’s just another fun thing I can share with my children about my job.

I also admit to being a bit jealous–the students in her class were assigned Alphasmarts!  Sweet!  I want one!

Since she is my oldest, I might just be totally in the dark.  Do all schools do this?  I can only relate to when I was in school, and I think we had computer lab once a year, lol.  I remember taking typing as a requirement in high school.  At any rate, it makes me proud.

What do you think about young bloggers?

I’m going to end this blog today with a joke my daughter told me she told her class:  “My mom is an Arthur who writes about King Author.”  Pretty good for 8 year old humor eh? lol

Happy writing and get dancing!
