Bittersweet

You know that feeling when you reach the last chocolate in the box? Or when you know the movie you’ve waited six months to see is almost over?

Yep. That’s how I feel.

I’m very bummed the blog is closing. I am the newbie in the group, only having joined MW’s back in September. It’s been my pleasure to be a part of such a wonderful site. I was a follower long before I was a blogging member. I agree with Eliza 100%. I hope one day Mama Writers will be back up and rearin’ to go. LOL Of course, here’s hoping that I’ll have changed my status bar from novice writer to pubbed author! :)

I’m very appreciative of the time I spent with all you MW’s and my blogmates. It’s definitely been an excellent chapter in my life story. One I will always remember with great fondness.

This last weekend I went to the coast with my aunts, gram, and cousins for a gal’s trip. We shopped till we dropped and indulged in tasty treats. We had a blast staying up late chatting, searching for sweet sales, and scoping out the sights. I was very sad to see sheets draped back over the couches and beds, the doors locked, and all our gear loaded up. It kind of drove home to me the meaning of bittersweet.

We were so thrilled to haul our cookies over there. The excitement was tangible and stayed thick in the air right up until the realization that it was time to head back to real life smacked us in face. We were leaving the cool weather, the fantastic company, and good times. It was really hard accept that our time together had finally come to an end. The whole way home, back to the dry heat of CA’s Central Valley, we laughed and joked about the fun we had, but more importantly, we made plans for our trip next year.

Whether it’s the end of a vacation or the closing of a well-loved blog, it’s always going to be bittersweet. BUT– we can’t spend our lives looking back. We’ve got to press onward!

I’ll keep on my journey to finish my MS and get published. I’ll still be posting away at The Lovestruck Novice. December 30th, I’ll begin another chapter when I become a mama for the third time. Like cogs inside a wheel, everything is falling into place. I can see the road ahead of me. Sure it’s lined with speed bumps and delays, but as long as I stay the course I’ll get there in plenty of time.

The same goes for all of you. Stick to your course and stay true to your goals. Doesn’t matter if you’re a writer or a reader, this blog made our paths cross. For that, I’ll always be grateful.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, MW’s. I hope we’ll all get a chance to meet one day and share a frosty beverage. Keep looking forward, because the best is yet to come.

Dish it up, what has been your favorite aspect of being part of the Mama Writers Blog?

Love and Hugs to you all! May you always have fair weather and a full tank! :) Sarah

Stay The Course!!

Howdy-Do, Mama Writers!! Hope your Friday is treating you right!

As many of you know, I’ve been gnawing away at my MS for quiet some time now. I had a goal to enter the Golden Heart last year, but watched that timeline disappear faster than a box of Little Debbie Peanut Butter Bars. Yep, I let real life and distractions like, um, other writers’ books snag my attention.

I don’t think I’m the only person to fall victim to such trappings as laundry, shuttling kids, meal planning, bills, Sookie Stackhouse books and TrueBlood! Real life happens and sometimes it knocks us with an ole one-two to the kisser. Hey, that’s life and it ain’t ever going to get easier. So, if life is the variable in the equation, that means I get to determine the constant. In this case, my constant is determination.

Behind every successful person is a moment where the rubber met the road, so to speak, and they got gazelle intense about achieving their dreams. Mine came last week. I received an email from an author friend of mine stating that her editor was not only critiquing pitches, but taking them! All I had to do was click over to the blog and pitch my opus in the comments sections. Holy $#@*, right?! A dream come true!

Yeah, here is where my “DOH! DOH! Moment!” came to pass. I didn’t have a pitch ready, because I had nothing to pitch! A half-written book is just that– a half-written book! So, I lost an opportunity because I hadn’t stepped up to the plate and put the time in swinging away. Awful baseball analogy, but you get the gist. :)

So, what’s a gal to do after she’s drowned her self-pity in Diet Coke and left over birthday cake from her 3 yr old’s party? I got frickin’ gazelle intense, that’s what!

No more putting my writing time on the back burner because something else comes up. I will make writing a priority. Life will always be there to throw lemons at you. It’s up to you to dodge the little buggers. I vote for making lemon custard filled pastries and pressing onward! *wink wink*

So, I’ve ramped up my battery and dived back into the program. No more Scarlet O’Hara or Snow White syndrome! Tomorrow ain’t always a given and waiting for Prince Charming to come to you isn’t nearly as fun as chasing him. All I need is 700 words a day, five days a week, and I’m on track to meeting my goal of entering a complete and polished MS in the Golden Heart this fall. That’s right. I’ll finally have written The End and after having a huge celebration for that milestone, I’ll be bellied-up to my key-board gazelle intense once again on finishing another one.

It’s not always easy admitting when you’ve taken detours, well, actually if you let me drive inevitably you’ll be taking detours because I have NO sense of direction or ability to parallel park, so I guess the  moral of this story is STAY THE COURSE AND FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS and not me on a road trip! ;)  But on the flipside, make sure you’re not so rigid you can’t roll with the punches. Don’t worry, we’ll get there together! Here’s my theme song of late, hope it sets your gears to motion, too! Darryl Worley’s Sounds Like Life To Me!

C’mon, fess up! I know I ain’t the only one! What goals are you chasing and how do you stay the course?

Have an awesome weekend Mama Writers! Get your three days of R&R started right! Head on over to my blog, The Lovestruck Novice, and scope out ANNA CAMPBELL’s guest blog! She’s talking all about secret identies and has offered up a free copy of her new release, MY RECKLESS SURRENDER, to one lucky commenter! Hope to see you there!

Mama's Little Graduate

Happy Mother’s Day, Mama Writers! I hope your day was extra special!

My Mother’s Day started a bit early. My son turned three last week and with that milestone came a closing to another chapter in his baby book. Since my son was 17months, he has been in the care of some wonderful and very loving teachers at my area’s UCP School. Twice a week I’d bring him for a speech therapy session and a little preschool class afterward.

The only downside to this pot o’ gold is once my son turned three he “aged out” of the program and thus gets turned over to the County Office of Education. Last Tuesday was his final session at UCP and it was a VERY bittersweet day. It was a blessing that I caught on to the fact my child wasn’t hitting his milestones in speech when he was little and pressed our pediatrician for an evaluation. In doing so, we had almost a year and a half of services, which seldom happens. Usually kids are closer to three before some parents notice a speech delay.

At the time of his evaluation, he had about a 6-9month delay in speech. Shoot forward to 3 years old and my guy has made outstanding progress. In March 2010, I blogged about him getting tubes in his ears and how well the surgery has paid off. Within the last month, he has upped his vocab to using three word combinations. Think “Mommy, drink, please.” Compared to what he was this time last year, it’s nothing short of spectacular! Saying good-bye to all the friends we’d made and the wonderful speech therapist and teachers definitely choked me up. Seeing my big boy walk down the hallway in his cap and gown filled me with such pride and love I was near bursting! What a truly fabulous Mother’s Day gift!

He still has a lot of work ahead of him. In correlation with the services provided to us through our county’s Office Of Ed, I’ll be driving him to CSU, Fresno to participate in their Speech Clinic where a Master’s Student in Speech Therapy will work with him. In total, he’ll have four speech sessions a week plus two half days at a preschool. That is a very tall order for a three year old! All I can say is thank goodness my daughter’s school has all day kindergarten. Sheesh! Just keeping up with pick up and drop off times this last year about made me certifiable! At least this way, I know she’ll be entertained and not bored to tears in a waiting room.

Being on this adventure with him has taught me so much. Sure this last year has been stressful juggling his complicated schedule with my daughter’s preschool schedule and my writing time, but ultimately it’s a crazy life I’d do blindfolded with one arm tied behind my back marching uphill in sand. To see him conversing is worth everything to me. While you might not have a special needs child, I know you feel the same way I do. It’s what makes us moms and why we get a whole day celebrated in our honor. ;)

It might be a stretch, but I see his journey to speaking much in the same light as my odyssey to publication. I started behind the eight-ball just like he did. I guess you could say he and I are both honing our crafts. We both had to buckled down and get to work to get where we are today. Just like him, I’ve met some milestones, too. March brought about my one year anniversary of entering the blogging world. A lot has changed since my first guest post (which was at Helen’s Heroes, just so you know. Love ya, Helen! :) ) I’m a more confident writer/blogger just like my boy is a more confident talker. I know given time and tenacity, he and I will both reach our goals and what a sweet success that will be!

What about you, Mama Writers? When was the last time you met a challenge head on or stepped over a milestone you never thought you’d reach?

A Trip Of A Lifetime!

Aloha, Mama Writers!

Where We Stayed: The Waikiki Marriot

I’ve been a bad, bad girl. I snuck away for five days and four nights of paradise! My darling hubby took me along with on his business trip to Oahu, Hawaii!

We left the kiddos with my mom, so I had plenty of “ME Time” while hubs worked. It was pure bliss to be able to eat at a restaurant and not be whisper-yelling, “Stop that!” or “Will you just sit still!” I actually ate a whole meal while it was still HOT. Talk about awesome!

One of the highlights of my trip was connecting with a fellow lover of romance novels. When I made mention of my upcoming trip to my good friend, Diana Cosby, she put me in contact with a lovely lady named, Kim, who just happened to live on the island. How cool, huh?!

Every plant or tree had flowers

As soon as hubs and I landed and got settled in the hotel, I called Kim and we made plans to meet. The two of us had a blast driving up and down the H1 Highway. It was wonderful to see the sights and chat about all things romance face-to-face instead of via email. Once my hubby concluded his business, Kim showed us various historical Pearl Harbor locations inside Hickman Air Force base. We got to see some of the original buildings, which still sported bullet holes, and the air field where all our planes were attacked. Plus, we got to view the USS Utah wreckage. An amazing and very humbling moment to be sure. I couldn’t begin to count the times I teared up throughout the day! I totally recommend a visit to the USS Arizona and Pearl Harbor Memorial. It will take your breath away.

From the beach at North Shore

Had I not been plugged into the Romance Community, my hubs and I would never have gotten the chance to experience such awe-inspiring  behind-the-scenes locals. What’s more, I wouldn’t have met Kim!!

Whether it was during a convention or while on vacation, when did being a part of the romance community enrich your life?

Mahalo everyone! If you’d like to see some more pics of my trip and find out which Project Runway Celeb I sat  next to on the plane over, swing by my blog, The Lovestruck Novice, on Monday!

Mama's Boy and his naughty antics

Mama's Boy and his naughty antics

Yes, ma’am! Don’t we all love to be a little naughty? I know my little guy sure does! See what happens when mama is daydreaming while changing laundry . . . lots of naughtiness.

As moms, we see more than our fair share of naughty doing. Whether our little ones are coloring on the walls or helping themselves to an entire gallon of milk, we’re battle ready.

Toddler or teenager, it doesn’t  matter , we still get visits from the naughty monster, except the not-so-little nugget has learned where you stash the good candy and how to defend curfew breaking like a Harvard lawyer!

With all the no-no’s and uh-uh’s going on around us, I think we forget to BE a little naughty our self. Let’s face it, moms are on call 24/7!! Down time is definitely deserved.

The last time I was naughty was just last week. I slipped out of the house to stock the fridge the night before my surgery. While moving through my list, somehow I ended up in the book aisle. It was like my cart had a mind of its own!! Kid free, I browsed to my heart’s content, which put me REALLY late getting back. To cover my tracks, I might have embellished how long the check-out lines were. Hubs wouldn’t have minded, but I sure didn’t want to deal with the ole eye roll or worse . . . “Ah-Ha, I knew it!”. My hubs knows I have a habit to feed, but when left at home with crabby, cracked out kids, a man can only handle so much, I guess. *hee-hee*

It’s great fun BEING naughty, until you GET caught!

Another "incident". Like the helping hand?

Another "incident". Like the helping hand?

Word to the wise, never and I mean NEVER assume your fella doesn’t read your blogs. *sigh* Appearantly, mine does. Let’s just say the “Oh, the lines were sooo long, honey!” ain’t gonna work again. Ever. Doh, doh, doh!

Before you go thinking I’m married to Shrek, just let me say, the only thing I suffered was a lot of teasing. You’d think I should know by now that tricks are for kids and not mamas with too cyber-savvy hubbies! :)

Sometimes you just have to laugh when naughtiness happens. Believe me, when I saw that messy-mess of Rice Krispies, I got a good chuckle, especially when my little guy got down on all fours, mooed, then bent over to eat his “hay”. The nice thing was that my hubby just happened to come home early and literally walked in the door while I was standing there laughing like a loon. I was very happy he got to see some of the “fun” mommy jobs I get to do.

**FYI- if a man says vacuuming up Rice Kripsies is OK, don’t listen. Three weeks later, he had to take it all apart to find out why there was no suction and found a huge goopy clog of munched up cereal.** For the record, I wanted to scoop it all up by hand then vacuum up the crumbs. LOL Men!

Ha! Maybe that little scenario was another example of being naughty. The I-don’t-want-to-listen-to-my-wife kind of naughtiness!

No matter how you get or be naughty, I think the most important thing is to let yourself have those little moments. Perfect is so over-rated! Go get naughty, Mama Writers!!

ps- Hiya, Honey!! xxoo ;)

C’mon on now, dish it up! Tell us all about your latest caper!
