Oh What a Tangled Web…

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Good morning, fellow Mamas ~

First off, I’m thrilled to be here with you guys today.  It’s giving me something to do on my Release Day other than obsess over how the new book is doing!!! homecoming-cover

That’s right… it’s Official Release Day for A HIGHLANDER’S HOMECOMING, the sixth book in my Daughters of the Glen series.  Naturally, I’m hoping you’re all making plans even now to hurry down to your favorite local bookstore TODAY to pick up your very own copy!!  J

Meanwhile, back in the real world,  I’ve spent the last few days buried up to my elbows in my website.  Darn thing ALWAYS seems to need updating!  And every time I check it, I can’t believe how out of date it is!  Has it really been two months since I did this last???  Seems like just last week!!  J  And how did so much change in just two months?!?!  Every time I think it’s absolutely perfect, I find something else I want to change!

The whole process started me thinking…  And that led to some questions I’m bringing here to all the MamaWriters … and MamaReaders!!  Feel free to answer any that strike your fancy.  I’m just curious as to how far off the norm I really am!!!  J

Writers – how many of you do your own website updates?   And if you do use someone else, do you still have the ability to tweak your site when you want to add or change something?  Are you happy with the way you’re doing it now?   If not, what would you like to be able to do differently?

Readers – which pretty much takes us all in, now doesn’t it??? –  What do you like to see on the Home Page of an author’s website?  I know most of us don’t have much time to spend surfing our favorite author’s pages — we’d rather be reading their books!!  But when you do, what are you looking for?  Is there anything you find particularly annoying on authors’ websites?  And what sorts of things do you like to find buried in the meat of the site?

Personally, I like to see book lists right up front… especially newest and upcoming books.  Makes it so much easier for me to pre-order if I know what’s coming out from my favorite authors and when!

Okay, Mamas… I’ll be checking back today to see what you have to say.  For now, maybe I can distract myself with some mindless Twittering…  *sigh*

Mindless Organizing

Mindless Organizing

I have an important question for all of you today:  How organized do you feel?

Have you stopped laughing yet?  J

If you’re like me, “organized” is one of those slippery little terms, constantly strived for, frequently missed.  Like my post being late today.  L   If asked, I would have bet money that I was on the schedule for next Monday.  Still… that nagging little voice in the back of my head had me checking the schedule today.  Thank goodness!

So… organized?  Obviously, that’s not me!

But I’ve discovered something interesting about myself.   “Organized” feels really good, even if I only attain it on the rarest of occasions.

What got me on this particular thought train today?   Easy.   Last week I finished my current manuscript and popped it in the mail to my editor, right at deadline.   After a few days of total brain down-time, I’m ready to get some things done.  The thing I realized is, I end up doing the same thing every time I finish a book – cleaning the fish tank, cleaning house, re-organizing my office [which, at the end of a book, ALWAYS looks like a tornado has swept through it!].

That’s when it dawned on me that my Muse likes “organized” even if it’s not my natural state.

Naturally, I have a couple of theories on why that is…

1 ~ Starting a new book with an organized, clean office fits together well.  A new fresh beginning sort of thing.

2 ~ The organizing process itself gives the Muse breathing time – mindless work which allows Muse to roam free while the hands shuffle and sort and dust.

The “mindless” part really hit home for me this weekend.   My thought processes for the next book have been setting in neutral.  I knew the hero for the next book, but not his story or – most important! – his heroine.  On Saturday I attended my local RWA chapter meeting, which is about an hour’s drive for me.  After the hour there and the hour back – sitting in a car all alone with nothing really to think about – it all just came to me!  I know the heroine.  I know the basic story.  I know their problems.

So, this week I’ll finish putting my office back in shape and start the new book, reinvigorated and Muse-friendly.

What about you guys?  Does your Muse enjoy Organized and Mindless?  Does she have a favorite Mindless activity?

MamaHood to the Power of Two

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before.   I love holidays.  LOVE them.   All of them.   I love seeing the faces of my children filled with wonder and surprise.  And I love being surprised.

This year, I totally got my Surprise Fix.

Let me start by sharing that, for the second year in a row, I’ve spent the two Biggie Holiday Months on deadline.   Wicked poor planning on my part.   I have a book due to my editor on January 2 .  I also have back-to-back releases due on December 29 [A HIGHLANDER’S DESTINY] and on January 26 [A HIGHLANDER’S HOMECOMING], which all the writers on this list know means not only am I supposed to be spending every minute of every day creating that next story, I’m also supposed to be spending those same minutes promoting my upcoming releases.

And shopping and baking and wrapping and sending out cards and planning surprises to amaze and delight and … well you get the picture.   Regular life for all MamaWriters.

**While we’re talking promotion, I should remind you to stop by my website, homecoming1  [www.MelissaMayhue.com ] to enter the contest for an Advance Readers Copy of A HIGHLANDER’S HOMECOMING along with some other fun goodies.**

With my brain appropriately fried and pulled in a million directions, I sat down to write this blog.   As I contemplated what I wanted to talk about, it occurred to me that my own MamaHood has moved through many steps, one of which I’m excited to share with you guys today.

I see MamaHood as an ongoing series of stages:  Pre-MamaHood, Pregnant Mama, Mama of Newborn, BabyMama, the infamous Multiple Mama [otherwise known at The Referee Mama], ToddlerMama [with a very special sympathy category for Mamas of Two-Year-Olds!], PreSchool Mama, Kindergarten Mama, Grade School Mama, Pre-Teen Mama, Teenager Mama [the hardest job since Mama for Two-Year-Olds!!!], and Mama Whose Babies Have Grown.

Yes, I’ve done them all so, no matter where you are on the scale, you have my sympathy [and my envy!].  But I’m on to another exciting step on the MamaHood Ladder… GrandMama!!

On Thanksgiving Day my oldest son and his wife arrived at my door and made a bee-line to my office.

“Can I use your computer, Mom?”

I followed along, babbling about anything and everything since their last visit, thrilled to see my little boy again.  [Okay… he hasn’t been little for a long time, but just because he towers over me doesn’t mean for one minute he isn’t still MY little boy!].

My babbling continued as he loaded a cd into the machine on my desk, stopping only when he asked if I knew what the picture on the screen was…

Well, duh.   Who doesn’t recognize an ultrasound?   Wait.   Ultrasound???

Yep.   My lovely daughter-in-law’s insides graced my computer screen.   It could mean only one thing…

“What are those two little bubbles in there?”   Yes, fellow Mamas, in moments like this, even I can ask the most inane questions on the planet.  Questions whose answers are the most obvious.

Not only are we having babies, we’re having TWINS!!!!

I’m going to be a Grandmama.   MamaHood Squared.  And since there are TWO little critters headed our way at the same time… MamaHood to the Power of Two!

For a Mama who loves surprises, this pretty much topped them all for me  this holiday season.   What about you?   Care to share your all-time favorite Holiday Surprise   either one you received or one you gave?

Writer’s Conferences

Monday, November 16th, 2009

What’s on my mind today as I sit down to put my blog together? As usual, my mind is a mess! It’s gotten so cluttered in there I’ve had to resort to lists if I actually want to get anything done anymore!

Of course there’s the book I’m working on… it’s due to my editor on January 1 and I always [and I do mean with every single book I write] panic about hitting my deadline somewhere around the two months to go mark. No, I’ve never missed a deadline yet, but my motto has always been to Panic Early, Panic Often.

destiny1I just saw the first review for A HIGHLANDER’S DESTINY today. Romantic Times gave it 4 stars… YAY! There’s one less thing for me to spend time worrying over. [But only one less – there are still lots of other reviews yet to come!]

Oh!  I also wanted to remember to remind YOU to stop by my website [ www.MelissaMayhue.com ] to enter the contest for an Advance Readers Copy of Destiny, along with some other fun goodies.

All of which reminded me of the promotion I need to be doing for the upcoming back to back releases – A HIGHLANDER’S DESTING [December 29] and A HIGHLANDER’S HOMECOMING [January 26]. I really want to do all I can for these books but, as any author can tell you, knowing what that “all you can” IS, is the hard part! Mostly I try to do those things I enjoy most. And one of those things is interacting with my readers.

But you know what? Readers are a pretty elusive bunch! J Just where, exactly, do you go to hunt them down?

One spot I look is at conferences. In fact, this year I’m adding a third big conference to my list of summer travels – RomCon in Denver.

I’ve seen conversations where people are trying to determine which of the Big Three they plan to attend: Romance Writers of America [RWA], Romantic Times [RT] or the new Romantic Conference, RomCon. To me, it’s not a question of either/or. It’s all three. That said, here’s MY take on the three:

RWA is for me as a writer. It’s a conference staged for writers, by writers. Yes, I know as soon as I say those words that there are many readers [and bloggers and reviewers] who attend RWA, but, in the final analysis, this conference is clearly structured for writers to get together with other writers, agents and editors. They have workshops and classes on writing and provide appointments for writers to pitch their work to agents and editors. If you want more info on this year’s conference in Nashville, TN you can find it at: http://tinyurl.com/23negx

RT was the first conference I attended that was more reader-focused, and I love that about it. I love being in a place where, when I sit down with a table of strangers [and, for the moment, we aren’t even going to touch on just how difficult THAT is for writers who spend all their time alone in a room with just them and a computer for company!] those strangers are as likely to be people who love reading as much as I love writing. Very, very cool. And let’s not forget, most writers I’ve met began as hard-core readers. I get as all over tingly and tongue-tied bumping into MY favorite authors as any other reader! RT gives me that opportunity, so I go. They’re sort of a hybrid conference, since they also provide classes for writers as well as readers, along with appointments to pitch to editors and agents. RT has also expanded their conference so that readers get to see more genres of authors, not just romance any more. You can find more information on this year’s conference in Columbus, OH at: http://tinyurl.com/m7ek2u

As for the new kid on the block, RomCon, it doesn’t have a track record yet, but it does have Borders Books as a sponsor. And even more attractive for me, it’s billed as a conference FOR Romance readers. As I understand it, all the participating authors will be romance authors, so it really will be a gathering of like minds! It’s shorter, too, so even though it’s established to be a big event, I think there will be more incentive for readers and authors to spend time together… because there’s just not a whole lot of time! [For those who are looking at the budget, this also means lower hotel bills than a week long conference]. If you’re interested in finding more info on RomCon in Denver, CO you can look here: www.RomConInc.com

Did you notice that one immediate attraction to me as an author is the locations? They span from the east coast to the Rocky Mountains. Somewhere along the way, one of them will hopefully be convenient for lots and lots of readers.

I know the MamaWriters readers are a mixed bunch: writers, readers, writer/readers, and, of course, Mamas! I’m hoping I’ll have a chance to meet many of you in person at one of those conferences this year. As I alluded to earlier, many writers are a little introverted. We aren’t used to being out in public any more. But that doesn’t mean we don’t love our readers and our online writer friends! We just feel shy and unsure of how to step up and start the conversation.

Why bother to add that? Well, if you find yourself at a conference this year and you see someone hovering against the wall [trying to blend in with the potted plants] or sitting at a table [avoiding eye contact!] don’t hesitate to walk up and introduce yourself. It could be ME… and I’d LOVE to have you to talk to!!! J

What about you guys? Anyone planning on making any of the Big Three this year???

Mama on the Road

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

When the youngest of three sons hit eighth grade, we tried a grand experiment…traveling together, just the two of us.   We went to Washington D.C., for a week over Spring Break and, amazingly enough, it went really well.   One of the great things I learned was that when we left Dad at home, our whole dynamic changed.   We’ve had the fun of family vacations and, as the only female in a house full of guys [even the dogs!], I was always The Girl when we were all together.   But when it was down to just the two of us, rather than Mom-Dad-Kid on vacation, we were on a more even footing as traveling companions.   We had such a good time, when we got home, we swore we’d do it again.

Another opportunity for a Mom-Son trip didn’t present itself until I was planning to go to a conference in Utah last year and considered driving rather than flying.  By then my son was a senior in high school and a long weekend in Park City sounded pretty good to him.   He was taking a photography class and used the opportunity to photograph some of the amazing scenery around the beautiful Utah resort where we stayed.  That was our first solo car trip and I found Number Three to be delightful company.    I’ve always liked to think that I raised interesting, funny kids, but eight hours of confined interaction really puts your theories to the test.   Fortunately for me, he passed with flying colors!  [Or does that mean that I passed???]

It’s conference time again and Number Three has volunteered to go along as traveling companion/bodyguard.   Not that I NEED a bodyguard, but I think it gives him a rush thinking of himself along those lines.   J  Of course, I jumped at his offer and, honestly?   I find I’m really looking forward to spending time with him and storing up some new memories.

Because, in the end, that’s what our trips have really been.   Special memories.

What about you?   Do you have favorite moments you’ve spent with your kids — whether it was school field trips or a special shopping day, or even a day spent home with just the two of you?
