“Never say never, for if you live long enough, chances are you will not be able to abide by its restrictions. Never is a long, undependable time, and life is too full of rich possibilities to have restrictions placed upon it.” Gloria Swanson (US actress, 1899-1983)
Inspiring quote, right? My good friend, Patrice, emailed this to me the day after I found out my book, Angel Vindicated, is a finalist in the RWA® RITA® contest for Best First Book, and it really resonated with me.
I NEVER thought I’d actually final in this contest. I NEVER thought I’d see a small press/eBook final in this contest. But it happened and I realized that I’d carted around all that negative energy for nothing. Instead of allowing myself to hope and dream, I’d bottled up my chances and threw them out to sea. I didn’t even bother to watch the bottle disappear into the horizon. I closed my eyes and turned away.
Thankfully that poor, neglected bottle came back with good news! Hello!
I learned a lesson from this, and I gotta tell ya that I won’t be saying NEVER when I’m waiting for the winner to be announced at the conference in July. I’m going to shove myself outside my tiny, restricting box and say MAYBE. I’m going to accept that I’m entitled to the rich possibilities Ms. Swanson was speaking of, and I’m going to allow myself to hope—and, more importantly, to enjoy the journey.
Because that’s what life is about for a mama writer, right? Enjoying the journey.
When was the last time you opened yourself up to the rich possibilities? Or restricted yourself from them?

First, Viola, huge congrats on the final. I too never thought a small press/epubbed book would make the cut. For me, not getting the call as a Golden Heart finalist was tough. I really thought i had a shot this year. Not getting the call made me question the entire thing, especially my hope. Then the other day, I got my scores. My total was a 40.8, which put me in the top quarter. One of the judges scored me more than 2 points lower than the rest. I’m not angry at that judge. It’s a matter of opinion. Suddenly my hope was back. I believe it was the luck of the draw and if a different judge had my MS, I might’ve finaled. There’s always next year.
Hi Shannyn, You’re so right. And good for you for not being angry with that judge or giving her any of your energy. These contests do have a lot to do with luck and I find that it’s the same deal once your book is published and out there for readers to judge. Look at the most beloved, most popular authors out there and you’ll find at least one or two people in a sea of hundreds who just don’t like their writing, for whatever reason. The key is to continue to focus on the good and, trust me, I know how difficult that is to do.
Congratulations on making the top quarter! It’s quite an accomplishment. I wish you the best!

Hey Shannyn, one contest that I entered, I also judged and I was able to see the judges marks across the board for all the entries. I judged a different category than I entered, but it was really illuminating to see. One judge gave me much, much lower marks than the others. Along with the marks though, was one of the most encouraging critiques I’d ever received in a contest — she gave me good feedback and also complimented a number of things. And when I checked the overall marks for all entries, I realized that this particular judge gave lower marks to ALL of the entries, and the mark she gave me was the highest she’d given to anyone.
I learned that this is a very subjective business. And there are judges who give numbers on a different scale. Either way, you entered. You made it into the top quarter and that is a huge accomplishment. Congratulations for that!
So
Heya Viola-baby! ((hugs!))

Hi Sarah! You always make me smile. And you know I think you’re an awesome person. Thanks for your support! I’ll take all the body part crossing I can get.
Hi, Viola! Congratulations, you never say never again woman! I was so pleased for you, not only because you were a small press, but because your talent so richly deserves to be recognized. I did much as you did, thinking my first GH was a fluke. I put my second in the ms. mailed it and refused to think about it anymore. You can only do what you can do and then the rest leave it up to storytelling ability, a whole lot of luck and persistence. I’m so happy you believed. Congratulations again on breaking through a very difficult mold. The Rita elevation tells people what all of us already knew! You rock!

Viola, we’re so proud of you!! Congratulations on the RITA nomination, it’s such a wonderful accomplishment. I will be crossing everything along with Sarah when July rolls around (even though I can’t be in Nashville… *sniff*)
The honor is well deserved for your talent, but in addition to that, your nomination is an inspiration. It gives that bottle of hope to other small press and e-press authors.
It’s shocking that even after the book is published, after the reviews come in, the readers respond, that we can question ourselves when it comes to contest wins and such. There’s always another step to take. But you can’t win the race if you never show up to the Start line.
Congrats again!

Hi Jeannie,
I’m so proud to be a member of this talented group of people. We write, we mother, we do it all. LOL! I agree, we gotta show up at that start line every time because you just never know what’s waiting at the finish, or at the midway point for that matter. Thank you for everything!!
Congrats Viola!!! You deserve it, and I’ll be there cheering you on in July!

Another round of congrats for the Rita final! I’m sorry I won’t be there to cheer you on!
It’s such a great question: When was the last time we opened ourselves up to rich possibilities, or restricted ourselves from seeing them?
I am a firm believer than ‘believing is seeing,’ and that we live the life we intend to live–consciously or, more often unconsciously–and we create the reality we live in. This is a great reminder to aim high, and go into each day with eyes wide open, because who knows what we’ll see, sitting right there in front of us? (Like wonderful husbands and beautiful kids.)
Thanks!

Hi Kris,
Thanks for the congrats!
So true! We do create our own reality. I just came home from my son’s baseball game and one thing the coach tells the hitters is to make contact and good things will happen. Take that chance, do your best, and good things will happen. Funny how that can translate to most everything else in life. LOL! But enough with the baseball analogies.
Congratulations. And what a great post! Will keep fingers crossed for you.

Viola, a huge congratulation. You made us all proud at Cerridwen Press. I never knew a small press ebook could win. I never knew it even qualifies to enter the RITA. Good for you for believing in yourself. You are an amazing example of success.

Viola, as a Cerridwen Press newbie (my first e-venture, WICKED COOL, comes out May 6th), I am thrilled for you and very proud!
I hope you are attending RWA. You **must** go, even if you have to beg, borrow or steal the money to do it! (Okay, maybe not steal.) Win or lose, it will be the headiest experience of your life. They will treat you like a queen. Other authors will openly envy you, a priceless experience in itself. [grin] To see your book cover and your head shot prominently displayed on the wall displays and, eventually, shown on a jumbotron to the applause of thousands … believe me, it is not to be missed! You will never forget it.
You will be seated in a special section reserved for nominees, so you may not get the full impact unless you turn around and look at the room behind you. Do that. It will bring a smile to your face in dark moments for years to come!
Congratulations, good luck, and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.
