Have you ever wondered what your family really thinks about your romance writing career? My twelve year old son makes no bones about it. He adopts a goofy voice, grabs one of my plastic martini glasses, and says “Oh! I’m Penny Watson! I’m writing romance novels about Santa Claus.” My husband tells his colleagues at work I write “fiction.” My miniature dachshund thinks romance novels are chew toys, and I have the battered books to prove it. Thank God for my seven year old daughter.  The week I sold my first manuscript, she beamed with pride and announced to all of her friends that “My Mom is getting her romance novel published!” A week later, while eating a snack, she told me “this cookie is totally getting published.” She had no clue what “getting published” actually meant, only that it was a really, really good thing.

The boys in the family want nothing to do with romance. My daughter, on the other hand, is already on the romance bandwagon. She adores the beautiful gowns on the front covers of the historicals. She wants a Ken doll to go with her new Special Edition Barbie. And in the greatest form of flattery, she decided to write her own romance novel. I was tickled. Without any help from Mama, she designed the front cover (see photo), and began her story. Soon enough, other little pals from the neighborhood were seated at my dining room table, with paper, markers, and heart-shaped stickers, creating their own books.  When I read her adorable story, I realized that my daughter had captured the true essence of a romance. Quite simply, it’s a love story. She might be too young to understand the term “published,” but she’s not too young to understand the concept of “love.”

Of course, she hasn’t quite finished her masterpiece. It will have to be concluded at a later date, since she’s now preoccupied with the planets and astronomy.

Penny Watson is a native Pittsburgher whose love of romance started at the age of twelve when she discovered Gone With The Wind in the middle school library. This resulted in numerous attempts at a first novel about a young lady with windswept hair who lived in a treehouse.

A biologist by training, Penny has worked at various times as a dolphin trainer, science teacher, florist, and turfgrass researcher (don’t ask). Through it all she was a compulsive reader and collector of romance novels. After taking time off to raise her two spirited children, she decided to rekindle her passion for storytelling with the support of a wonderful writer’s group, The Quirky Ladies. Now she gets to incorporate her wide array of interests, including gardening, cooking and travel into her light paranormal stories. Penny lives outside of Boston with one fly-fishing crazed husband, two lively Filipino kids, and a wiener dog.
