I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before. I love holidays. LOVE them. All of them. I love seeing the faces of my children filled with wonder and surprise. And I love being surprised.
This year, I totally got my Surprise Fix.
Let me start by sharing that, for the second year in a row, I’ve spent the two Biggie Holiday Months on deadline. Wicked poor planning on my part. I have a book due to my editor on January 2 . I also have back-to-back releases due on December 29 [A HIGHLANDER’S DESTINY] and on January 26 [A HIGHLANDER’S HOMECOMING], which all the writers on this list know means not only am I supposed to be spending every minute of every day creating that next story, I’m also supposed to be spending those same minutes promoting my upcoming releases.
And shopping and baking and wrapping and sending out cards and planning surprises to amaze and delight and … well you get the picture. Regular life for all MamaWriters.
**While we’re talking promotion, I should remind you to stop by my website,
[www.MelissaMayhue.com ] to enter the contest for an Advance Readers Copy of A HIGHLANDER’S HOMECOMING along with some other fun goodies.**
With my brain appropriately fried and pulled in a million directions, I sat down to write this blog. As I contemplated what I wanted to talk about, it occurred to me that my own MamaHood has moved through many steps, one of which I’m excited to share with you guys today.
I see MamaHood as an ongoing series of stages: Pre-MamaHood, Pregnant Mama, Mama of Newborn, BabyMama, the infamous Multiple Mama [otherwise known at The Referee Mama], ToddlerMama [with a very special sympathy category for Mamas of Two-Year-Olds!], PreSchool Mama, Kindergarten Mama, Grade School Mama, Pre-Teen Mama, Teenager Mama [the hardest job since Mama for Two-Year-Olds!!!], and Mama Whose Babies Have Grown.
Yes, I’ve done them all so, no matter where you are on the scale, you have my sympathy [and my envy!]. But I’m on to another exciting step on the MamaHood Ladder… GrandMama!!
On Thanksgiving Day my oldest son and his wife arrived at my door and made a bee-line to my office.
“Can I use your computer, Mom?”
I followed along, babbling about anything and everything since their last visit, thrilled to see my little boy again. [Okay… he hasn’t been little for a long time, but just because he towers over me doesn’t mean for one minute he isn’t still MY little boy!].
My babbling continued as he loaded a cd into the machine on my desk, stopping only when he asked if I knew what the picture on the screen was…
Well, duh. Who doesn’t recognize an ultrasound? Wait. Ultrasound???
Yep. My lovely daughter-in-law’s insides graced my computer screen. It could mean only one thing…
“What are those two little bubbles in there?” Yes, fellow Mamas, in moments like this, even I can ask the most inane questions on the planet. Questions whose answers are the most obvious.
Not only are we having babies, we’re having TWINS!!!!
I’m going to be a Grandmama. MamaHood Squared. And since there are TWO little critters headed our way at the same time… MamaHood to the Power of Two!
For a Mama who loves surprises, this pretty much topped them all for me this holiday season. What about you? Care to share your all-time favorite Holiday Surprise – either one you received or one you gave?

Congratulations, Melissa, or should I say GrandMama Mayhue?
My best holiday surprise came last year when I was offered a contract on my first story!
Now that IS a wonderful holiday surprise!!!
Oh, wow! Melissa, what lovely news!! I’m in-between a Teenager Mama and a Mama Whose Babies Have Grown. One is graduating this holiday season, which is a mixed blessing, and one started university this past August. I did mention to them both that I wasn’t ready to be a grandma, so think! when they were on their own and the Teenage one replied, “But you are old enough to be one!!”
Congratulations again on all the wonderful holiday events going on at your house!
ACK!!! Teenagers can be so jolting to the nerves [and the ego!!] can’t they??? Thanks for the good thoughts, Tessa!
Congratulations, Melissa!!!! A great holiday surprise!
Thanks, Cynthia!!
Melissa!!!!
I’m so happy for you. This is so exciting! When are they due? Is it too soon to know the variety of twins you are expecting? Not that it makes any difference, you are so very lucky and I’m sure floating on cloud 9.
What a wonderful Christmas present. I can’t think of anything better. Even a new contract will pale to this happy news.
Cindy
Thanks so much, Cindy! They’re due July 27, but the doctor predicts a June delivery because there are two of them. As far as variety
I’m sure anyone who knows me, knows I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a girl somewhere in the bunch!
So far we know only that whatever they are, they’re probably the same because they appear to be identical.

Melissa, that”s an awesome surprise and what a clever way to be told. Two bubbles indeed. Wow! Congratulations. I’m so jealous (not that I want my D & J to have twins) and have been waiting 8 years. Even with your deadlines, take a break and celebrate.
Believe me, Karen, I understand… these two were married 8 years and after all this time, a baby announcement was the farthest thing from my mind!

Hey, these “things I have in common with Melissa” are getting a little freaky.
I hated the idea of becoming a grandma, and couldn’t come up with what I wanted to be called. Then, after we found out they are twins, (expected in March) I decided to be called Grandma Grandma.
So, welcome to the Grandma Grandma Club!!!!
(They will be named Tatum and Taylee…Drysdale.)
Amazing, huh? No wonder we hit it off that first time we met at conference!!!
Ours are due July 27, but expected to make their debut in late June… so, not so far from when yours arrive! I’m sure we’ll have STORIES to compare!!! hehehe…

Twins! Wow, congrats, Melissa!!
Thanks, Vi. I’m totally excited to have a baby…er… babies around to play with and spoil…and then send home!!!
~ M
Oh Melissa congratulations!!! How exciting and twins too! I bet you are just overjoyed! I love babies
Right now I am BabyMama, PreSchool Mama and Grade-School Mama, a broad spectrum I’m thoroughly enjoying! I love to see the surprised looks on their faces!
The best holiday surprise I ever got was three Christmases ago. Our house burned down on 12/12, and with it all of our decor and the only year I’d done all of our shopping, so presents too… We spent the next couple of weeks trying to find a place to live that was still in the same school district, putting our dog in long term care, dealing with insurance, tear down crews, salvation crews, builders, trying to remember what we owned, buying underwear, toothbrushes, all those things you take for granted that you have, we had literally the clothes on our backs.
We finally found a house in our own neighborhood to rent three days before Christmas. I rushed to wal-mart and bought a fake tree, stockings and a few gifts. Then on Christmas eve, REAL Santa arrived. Our community had done a toy drive for our kids, and the wrapped gifts literally filled out living room. Seeing the look on my then 5 year olds face as she opened gifts was a true blessing, because she had lost everything she owned too.
Makes you realize there really are truly good people in the world.
Hugs,
Eliza
Oh, Eliza! What a wonderful story to share with us. Reaffirms the good in the world, doesn’t it? [and made me weepy, too, I might add!]
It is amazing sometimes, in spite of all our grumbles, how much we have to be thankful for.
~ Melissa
It really does! We’ve always given around this time of year, and until being on the receiving end I didn’t realize how much it really means to people.
Congrats Melissa,
Wonderful news. May the mother and babies enjoy great health and well-being and may the father and Grandmama enjoy the coming chaos with patience and joy.
My Christmas surprise this year is a DVD for each of my siblings and mother of family video that spans the years from 1960 to the early 1990s.
Enjoy the holiday and new release buzz.
Stanalei
Oh, Stanalei! That’s a fantastic surprise. Those are the things you just can’t go out and buy…and they’re the real treasures!
~ Melissa
HI Melissa!
Congrats on the twins! That’s fantastic!
My greatest gift was my daughter. She was born Dec 2nd, 2005. So, newborn mamahood was my surprise!!
Eliza- I can’t imagine your loss. Goodness! I’m so glad your community came together for you. That’s truly the spirit of the season- bringing families together. You should add another “mama merit badge” to your list: Survivor Mama.
Enjoy your pre-grandma-mamahood, Melissa! My mom had a blast shopping for my daughter before she was born- drove my dad nuts!! LOL Thanks for sharing your good news!
Shopping! I get to do double shopping!! That’s the best part. [They're not sure if they want to find out ahead of time whether they're having girls or boys. I told them we need to work something out between me and their doctor... you know...to add to that shopping pleasure!!] hehehe…
~ M
I like that Sarah!
I’ve always said I was superwoman, lol

Do they live nearby?
Big congrats to your son and daughter-in-law, and enjoy the excitement you’re going to have! Twins–holy cow! They are definitely going to need you in a few months.
Congrats to all–what a wonderful Christmas present!
They only live about an hour away, which is wonderful. And my daughter in law is lucky that her mom is only 15 or 20 minutes away…and already making plans to be there to help after the baby is born.
I’m discovering that GrandmamaHood is looking easier than MamaHood did!
[Of course, I expected THAT to be easy before I did it!!!]
~ M
Congrats Melissa, that’s wonderful news!
Thanks, Stephanie!
Congrats, Melissa! What a wonderful surprise. I also am a big fan of surprises (as long as they are positive and not things like… your car is breaking down –surprise -OR- you’re out of money–surprise!)
Enjoy them! What a neat thing and tell your son and his wife congratulations too!
Thanks, Kelli Ann! Oh, yes… there are those OTHER surprises [like my laptop dying several days ago!] But I’m trying to not even think of them. As I said before, no matter how many little things crop up, I’m constantly reminded of how much I have to be thankful for — like all of you!
~ Melissa
CONGRATS!! Melissa, that is lovely news!! I’m enjoying being a Mama myself, but I can wait on being a Grandma for a while. *laughs*
