Today crept up on me, hiding beneath sick children and endless carpooling and the writing of 2 proposals and a bit of poor sleep. So, I will share someone else’s thoughts about writing, because I think they will be more coherent.
Here is a video of Joyce Carol Oates talking about writing character in a novel, and how she starts every novel with character. Character is vitally important to a romance novel, and to hear someone of Joyce Carol Oates talk about how the first 6 weeks of writing a novel are hell, well, it gives hope.
Not sure if that’s because misery loves company, or for some higher, more empathetic, we’re-all-in-this-together reason, but there you have it. Hope. And character.
Enjoy.

Hope your little one feels better soon and good luck with your proposals!
Kris,
This is so interesting. Thanks for sharing…I like how she mentioned that the setting can also be part of character, as can animals… brings back to mind the conversation last week about kids in our novels…
Great video!

Hope your kiddos feel better soon! Not fun at all when they’re sick. I like what Ms. Oates is saying. Characterization definitely comes first for me. Creating and building them up is one of my favorite things about writing.

Hey Sarah~
Thanks–I think I felt them.
I’m doing okay, just felt like such a dope to awaken yesterday (at5amdeargodwhatiswrongwithmyson??), wander around the house in a daze, making lunches, etc, then suddenly realize, at 7am, Oh NO! It’s my day to blog!
At least I didn’t suddenly realize, “Oh, no, it’s my day to ensure the emotional well-being of our son!’ or, harder yet, “finish my book!” B/C those things would have taken a lot longer.
