Writing from the Heart & Bewitching You Release Day!!

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Thrusting your heart and soul into your work. It doesn’t happen every day. Not with every single sentence I write. But it happened several times when I was writing Bewitching You.

I remember sitting at my laptop and laughing out loud as my characters bantered back and forth. And I remember writing a scene or two where tears burned my eyes because the emotions were so intense. Does that sound nuts? I’m sitting here writing this and wondering if people are going to think I’m a little off kilter.

Don’t worry. I usually write when there’s no one around. No one can hear me cackling away, punching at keys. No one sees me tearing up as I stare at my words on the screen.

At least I hope not. Maybe my family is storing away the straight jacket for the perfect moment when I’m not looking.

Seriously though, the one great thing about putting my heart into a book is that the reader will benefit from this. Hopefully, anyway. If I’m feeling the emotion as I write it, there’s a better chance the reader will feel the emotion as she’s reading it. If a scene is lacking emotion, then it’s too dry, too boring. Right?

So I guess there’s a method to my madness. Put away the straight jacket, guys. I’m acting nutty for a good reason. I’m bringing characters to life, creating a story people will be able to relate with.

I’m writing from the heart.

Today is the official release day for Bewitching You. It’s now available in eBook and paperback. AND today I’m giving away a free eBook copy to a random commenter over at http://www.liaslater.blogspot.com , if you want to check it out. I have an excerpt over there, as well. 18 & over, please!

Hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween!

Writing and Life With Baby #3

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

alexis1I’m back!  Well, officially I never left—but I’m back to blogging!  It’s a new me…now I’m the mother of three gorgeous girls.  I’m a size bigger—although I’m working on that one—and I have a new perfume:  Eau de Puké-Puké.  I assure you, my DH finds my new scent oh-so-enchanting, lol.

So what have I learned from my experience, besides the fact that if I were to have another baby, my husband can’t leave my side, since the five minutes he did leave, I birthed a baby?  Well, I’ve learned that I can still survive on a few hours of sleep, having three kids is WAY different than two—no matter what anyone tells you—especially when all three are sick, and that my butt seems to grow exponentially with each new addition.

Writing at first was tough.  The first month of having a newborn I got nothing done.  Well, that’s not true, I did A LOT of thinking about my writing.  Planning in my head, and there have been many a night up at 3am writing scenes in my head while feeding the baby, that I promptly forgot once my head hit the pillow again.  But the last two weeks have been productive for me, and things seem to be on the up and up!

I finished the edits my editor sent me before I had the baby, phew!  And I’ve gotten back into the writing groove.  I can reasonably write for about 1-2 hours a day.  Things just have to be planned out A LOT more.  And I’ve learned to not be upset when it doesn’t happen.

Obviously, baby Alexis isn’t on a steady schedule yet, but she does have a longer nap in the morning and another in the afternoon.  I’ve learned to do my emails/promo/workshops/critiques/chores in the morning, and in the afternoon I’m working on my own writing/editing.  If nap time isn’t working, I’ve learned to type while breastfeeding J On top of that I’m spending individual time with my older girls, getting in some walks, going to the park, cooking dinner by 5:30 and spending some time with the hubster—although by the evening, all he gets is to sit next to me on the couch and watch tv while I occasionally fall into a narcoleptic 3 second snooze and pass him the littlest cherub.

It’s been an adjustment to be sure, but I am happy to report that it does seem to be going quite well.  I feel human again.  I’m wearing REAL jeans, and I shower everyday.

AND… I had a release yesterday.  Her Captain Surrenders, the 2nd book in my Men of the Sea series, (Regency Romance e-novella) was released!  Yay!

Here’s a blurb and an excerpt:

hercaptainsurrenders_w3647_300Captain Nathaniel Cruise has a job to do.  But what happens when a beautiful woman tempts him to turn his eye from his duties to pursue more…pleasurable entertainments?  Not only that, the woman has a wit and intelligence that rivals his own and he finds himself falling deeper and harder for her.

Lady Juliette Blackburn, knows what she wants, and she wants Captain Cruise.  A rich widow in her own right, she’s decided to take her love life in her own hands.  However, at every turn the man of her dreams is running away from her.  She’ll have to keep up a subtle chase to discreetly reel him in.

Despite their mutual attraction something darker is pulling them together.  A rogue former lover of Juliette’s is the main suspect in Nathaniel’s investigation, and now he’s threatening both their livelihoods.  Together they’ll fight the villain and perhaps on the way Nathaniel and Juliette will surrender to love.

“Author Eliza Knight delivers maximum heat per page in HER CAPTAIN SURRENDERS. Confirmed bachelor Captain Nathaniel Cruise meets his match in Lady Juliette Blackburn whose aim is matrimony. Captain Cruise must uncover a traitor to the Crown while resisting Juliette’s sizzling advances. Their lives depend on his success. HER CAPTAIN SURRENDERS is a sexy romp that keeps you guessing right to the end.”

author of award winning ROSE ADAGIO

Excerpt

“Captain Cruise.” His hostess Lady Challedon came up behind him. “May I introduce to you to a dear friend?”

Nathaniel swallowed his distaste at meeting another groom hunter, and turned to gaze into the most stunning pair of lavender eyes, made all the more brilliant by a frame of thick, curling black lashes. Lady Blackburn. For a moment he was struck dumb. They’d never been formally introduced, yet he’d seen her everywhere, the park, ballrooms, Covent Garden, and dinner parties. And she had seen him. More than once, he’d looked up to find her eyes on him but he’d been too preoccupied helping Captain Montgomery, the Earl of Stafford, to beg an introduction. He’d managed to find out her name, that she was a widow, and little else.

“My pleasure, ladies.”

He bowed. She curtsied. Nathaniel let his gaze fall to where full breasts pushed the limits of her silvery gown. His gaze lingered on her breasts a scant moment longer before traveling the length of her narrow waist and rounded hips. The curves of her figure promised to be a lush experience for any man. His body stirred to life with the thought. Perhaps he could persuade her to enjoy a night with him.

He caught his bearings and managed a polite, “Lady Blackburn, would you care to honor me with a dance?”

“I should like that very much.”

Deep golden blonde hair, with hints of coral red, bobbed atop her delicate head as she nodded. She slipped her arm into the crook of his elbow, and gazed up at him. Her touch sent a shocking hunger racing through his veins. He’d never reacted this way to a woman before.

Get ahold of yourself, Nathaniel! He felt like an adolescent rather than the two and thirty years he was.

“Captain Cruise, I seem to be running into you quite often. Are you enjoying the Season?”

He paused a moment before answering. He couldn’t tell her he would rather chew off his own arm than attend another ball. He should let her know he didn’t intend to tarry long in London. The sea called his name, begged him to return, and he planned to answer as soon as he possibly could.

“’Tis a most fascinating way to distract myself until I return to my ship.” Nathaniel glanced at the lady to gage her reaction.

The corners of her mouth curved into a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. She looked away, as if trying to hide her disappointment.

“What is the name of your ship, Captain?” Her voice held a note of pique. Was she a saucy lady then?

Special Guest – NYT Bestselling author Angie Fox

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

MamaWriters are thrilled to have author Angie Fox with us today.  Her debut book, The Accidental Demon-Slayer, went to the NYT bestseller list right off, which isn’t surprising, with reviews like this, from The Chicago Tribune: “With its sharp, witty writing and unique characters, Angie Fox’s contemporary paranormal debut is fabulously fun.” That she’s had such success is inspiring, as she wrote these books with 2 young children in tow.

Her second book, The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers, is out now, and her third, A Tale of Two Demon Slayers, is on the way, in February, 2010.

Please help us welcome the Angie Fox!

angie-fox-author-photoWriting With Kids

A few weeks ago, my daughter came to me with a broken Ariel doll. She’d snapped the tail fin right off and was shocked when I couldn’t repair the plastic. “But mom,” she pleaded. “You can do anything!”

I didn’t know whether to correct her or to thank her. Because the truth is, most moms I know are a bit frazzled (myself included). It can be hard to find ten minutes for a shower some mornings, not to mention time to write a novel.

So what is the best way to write while raising kids? I wish I knew. But here are a few things I have learned along the way.

Get organized

Just like your kids have a schedule (mostly), get yourself on a writing schedule. Personally, the only time I can write is when my kids are unconscious, so I write during afternoon nap times. If one or both of the kids don’t cooperate, I set my alarm for 4:00 a.m. the next day and sneak in a writing session before the family wakes up. It’s not always easy. Heaven knows I’m not a morning person. But it’s the best way I know to keep my books, and my writing, on track.

Plus, you’ll be surprised at how your muse really does cooperate when you commit yourself. For example, when I sat down to write the Accidental the-accidental-demon-slayerDemon Slayer series, I had no notes about a sidekick for my heroine. But in the second chapter, when Lizzie learns she’s a demon slayer and there are some very scary, very angry creatures on her tail, she takes comfort in her dog. As I was writing, I thought, ‘This is a sweet moment. Now how do I throw her off?’

I made the dog say something to her. Nothing big. After all, he’s only after the fettuccine from last week. And he knows exactly where Lizzie can find it (back of the fridge, to the left of the lettuce crisper, behind the mustard). It amused me, so I did it. Thanks to her unholy powers, Lizzie can now understand her smart-mouthed Jack Russell Terrier. I ended up having a ball with it. Pirate can say and do things that my heroine can’t. He’s such a kick to write.

But you know what? I’ve noticed that nine times out of ten, those kinds of “ah hah” writing moments only happen when I’m on schedule and wholly committed to my writing. It’s like making an appointment with your muse. She knows when to show up, and that you’ll be there.

Know you can do it

Just like the time my five-year-old emptied her Barbie pool on her bed “to see what would happen,” I had to go with the flow when I realized I had written a talking dog into a story with a geriatric biker witch gang that was about to hit the road. When unexpected things pop up, the trick is to push forward.

In the case of the Barbie pool, we used plenty of towels – and a hair dryer. In the case of my manuscript, I researched and learned about the Biker Dogs Motorcycle Club, made up exclusively of Harley riders and their dogs. I ended up meeting some of them, along with a few other bikers along the way. dangerous-bookThese bikers were so great to me. They hoisted me onto the back of their Harleys (with dogs in tow). They took me to biker rallies (note to self: don’t wear pink). And they laughed at me when I tried to put my helmet on backwards (I still say I was distracted by the Pomeranian wearing a tiny pair of motorcycle glasses).

I was not only able to keep my dog and the Harleys too, but after a few outings with my new biker friends, I was able to make my geriatric biker witch characters a lot more realistic.

Have fun

As moms, we’re so used to doing everything for everybody that we sometimes forget about ourselves. This writing, this time with your book, is something fun and amazing that you can do for just you. What have you always wanted to write? What will you do for the pure joy of it? How can you get started?

Luckily, my critique partner is also the mom of two small kids. We’re always trying to amuse each other as we write. Typical feedback will come like this, “What are you doing? Don’t get me wrong. I like it when you come up with quirky new hideouts for the Red Skull biker witches. But we’re heading into the climax of the book. Why do we need a new one?”

I usually don’t have any good answer to questions like that except, “I did it because it made me smile.” But, really, if I’m amusing myself as a writer, won’t my readers have more fun too? At least that’s my excuse. In the case of the new hideout, it worked out. The Red Skulls end up on this abandoned riverboat that they’d enchanted years earlier (while drunk on dandelion wine). Now they not only need a safe place, but they need to catch the Choking spells, Lose Your Keys spells, not to mention the Frozen Underwear spells ready to attack from around corners and behind the old jukebox.

And in conclusion (because your kids are probably emptying your underwear drawer as you read this), I think it might be easier in some ways to write midt2dswhile balancing the needs of a family. When you have distractions, you have to take a stand for your writing time and your story. You have to let yourself have fun along the way. And you have a profound sense of accomplishment when you do sit down and let those words flow.

Besides – we’re moms. From what I’ve heard, we can do anything.

Classroom Helper

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

So, I’m late today. <hangs head>

Sorry everyone. Once again, this mama assumed she had time to do EVERYTHING. And by everything, I mean:

  • Finish climactic scene on WIP
  • Dress munchkins
  • Feed munchkins breakfast
  • Brush munchkins hair
  • Insist munchkins brush own teeth and wipe own bottoms (ugh!)
  • Get EVERYONE out the door so I could help with class.

Well, let’s see. Got the climax done. HOORAY!!!!! Got the girls dressed. Sort of got them fed. Their hair is mostly brushed. They did brush their own teeth and take care of potty stuff, so score one for me!

And, we made it to school on time. However, my mind has been in a tizzy. I’m trying to finish my story. I’m two thousand words from the finish line. Hero and Heroine saved the day this morning at just after 7 AM.  It was amazing…and someday, with polish, I hope to share this story with all of you…There’s action, adventure, romance, danger! but, I digress.

As I was sitting in the classroom, helping them with journals – as is my classroom job – I watched my daughter drawing her journal picture, and attempt to write out (phonetically) about our trip last week to Disneyland. She embellished a bit, about the abominable snowman chasing them in the Matterhorn.  Sitting there, I realize she’s gotten a bit of my flare for the dramatic. But, her fellow classmates were enthralled.

I love that she’s starting to write her own books. My now 4 yo Munchkin #2 loves to act her stories out. While Munchkin #1 writes them herself. I couldn’t be more proud. It makes the drama of leaving the house much easier to take, knowing this is what she’s like when she’s in class.

In story time, the teacher showed them the book cover, the spine, and the back cover. She asked what goes on the spine. My daughter states, “That’s where Mommy’s name goes.”

I grin from the inside, out, as the whole class turns to look at Munchkin #1′s mama. Me.

I LOVE helping in class. I love that she knows mommy writes books.

And, perhaps someday she’ll understand when she finds herself inside the pages. From a dusting of freckles on my heroine’s nose, to the way she stomps her foot in frustration.

They’re my inspiration, and just maybe, I’m theirs, too.

Have a great day, everyone!

~Ashley
