Raise your hand if you no longer like bikini season—ME!
Between having two kids and a career that involves sitting on my butt most of the time, I have long given up the rushing thrill of pulling out the summer clothes, and especially the bathing suits.
I admit, I’m a bit of a scatterbrain in the sense that my mind isn’t on the fun stuff like housework and exercise, it’s always buried in the next scene or a new idea or how I can incorporate a wacky customer’s mannerisms into a secondary character. By the time I remember that I hadn’t exercised or gone for that walk I promised myself I would do, it’s time to make dinner or drive the kids to their next sporting practice.
Now, I will say that I do play baseball Sunday nights in a fun mixed league, one hour once a week so I’m not totally horrid but still, the junk in the trunk is getting fuller and its high time I need to do something about it.
So, mamawriters and mamareaders—how do you keep the junk out of the trunk and get yourself motivated to eat write—er right—and keep activity level high while trying to get work done from a sitting position without losing the flow of the writing or reading process??

Hey Stacy,
Jeez, it’s so hard, isn’t it? For me, I’ve realized I just have to sacrifice something to get something else. In this case, it’s sacrificing a little bit of precious writing time to exercise.
And I’m not good at it yet! At all. In fact, I just set up a star-chart for myself–as in, you-get-a-star-if-you-do-the-good-behavior chart. LOL Just like we sometimes do for my son, when he needs that extra help to practice a behavior.
So, now my 4 year old is helping to keep me on track, which is great, & really helps motivate me–knowing I’m being a role model.
One weird thing that helps me: I search out 1 or 2 little facts that feel motivating re: exercise, and keep them in my mind. Makes it feel more do-able.
Like, I recently read some research that shows people who did 40 minutes of aerobic exercise at a steady rate lost significantly LESS weight than people who did 20 minutes of aerobic exercise, interspersed with ‘sprints’ (as hard as you can, can’t-catch-your-breath rate) for 8 seconds every so often during the workout.
I forget the exact ratio, but I’m starting out doing those 8 second ‘sprints’ every 45 seconds or so. It’s so do-able, and I keep reminding myself ‘it’s only 20 minutes. It’s only 20 minutes.”
I’m certain music would help too. I gotta get me an iPod, so I can ride/run with that. I do listen to music when I lift, and I know the time goes faster.
Oh! And when I’m exercising, I suppose I could listen to RWA conference CDs, so I’m doing something writing related.
Man, I sometimes talk a lot in my replies, don’t i?
Good luck, Stacy, on balancing your health, your writing, and your kids/husband. I know I won’t be in a bikini this summer, but maybe by next one.
Kris,
That’s hilarious! But effective. I give myself stars when I work out too!

Stacy,
It’s a little easier for me to not expand on the junk in the trunk during the summer because the kids like to go for bike rides. I walk alongside (or behind) them and at least get out for a little while.
It’s kind of sad, but I haven’t worn a swimming suit in almost three years. I just haven’t found one I feel comfortable in so I’ve become a “sticking the feet in” kind of girl.
Good luck with your battle with the junk in the trunk!

Ah, swimsuit season–we all dread it! I get up early and walk in the quiet early morning. Then try to fit in one or two other walks a day with my little one. I also love to do yoga.
Good luck with your workout routine!
Renee
This is the exact reason I hope to always keep my job at the gym. I get paid to work out, whether I feel like it or not.
The eating part…not so easy (as I sit here eating a chocolate chip cookie at 1 a.m.)
