First off, I have to say I am in complete shock that it is May 1st! Seriously, that means 2009 is almost half over and I have not done nearly as much as I’d planned to by this point in time…sigh… Nothing ever changes, huh? LOL
Today’s blog is about writing and mothering, and boy aren’t they similar more often than you think?
This week I’ve been amazed by all three of my children. My eldest, has really come into her own—although she is only 8 years old. And I must say, I’m shocked. She is so much like me its scary—I mean literally like looking into my past. She is so creative and artistic and I love watching her little mind spin these tails. So what does she look like that has left me speechless? Nose in a book constantly, even asking to take it on the bus for school… A part in the school musical… Morning news anchor for school… Acting camp this summer… Writing these deep emotional passages that rattle even me…
My 3yo, has also decided she has a mind of her own, and I don’t just mean her yelling “Fine!” at me when I ask her to do something. Earlier, this week she had me laughing while I put away her laundry and found a different stuffed animal nestled in each drawer. Tears came to my eyes when she said it was important to her that I be her best friend. Such a sweetie!
And the 3rd? Not born quite yet, this little baby in-utero has a mind of its own as well! I apologize for only being able to say “it” for my little gummy bear did not make it’s gender known at our sonogram—but I have another in a couple weeks, so I’ll let you know! A few nights ago it nestled itself right into my ribs, and as I gently pressed what felt like a head, trying to move it, a foot jabbed me on the opposite side—as if to say, “I am not moving!”
Needless to say, I’ve had quite a thrilling week with my spawn—er—children. But how has my writing surprised me? I’ve ventured into a couple of new arenas. I’m working on a non-fiction historical, which isn’t entirely surprising given that I write historical articles, but it shocks me none the less that I’ve actually begun. I’ve been talking about it for over a year, so to actually sit down and type it has shocked me, lol. I’ve also begun a collaboration with a fellow author on a western historical—my first! I’m really enjoying the process. I am still of course working on my second medieval novel, a sizzling regency and another erotic Highlander story. I just can’t seem to work on one thing at a time.
What surprises have you encountered lately? Kids doing anything that shocks you? Do you find yourself venturing into new things? What about your writing, are your characters, setting, plots, and whatever else making you do a double take?
Happy May and of course, TGIF!!!

Hi Eliza! I enjoyed your post a lot. Thanks for sharing about your kids. Very cute.
My 3yr old surprised me the other night when we lying in her bed and had just finished a story. She held a conversation with me! I was amazed. Normally, I hear the usual: No naps, I want juice, Patrick hit me. But this time, we were talking about the book and ‘telling secrets.’ I got a little emotional. My baby isn’t quite a baby anymore.
My 2yr old, he is a different kettle of fish. They’re telling us he has apraxia because he says not a word and doesn’t move his face when he vocalizes. So, I have championed him. We do his excercises whenever we can. And on his Tuesday session, the therapist and I helped him say “mama.” Yep, I cried.
Thank you, Eliza for such a touching post. We all love our kids and in many ways they are the inspiration we need.
Thank you Sarah!
Isn’t it so amazing when they first start having conversatoins with you? It makes me smile uncontrollably. And how wonderful that he said mama! That would have brought tears to my eyes too.
They really are the best inspiration we need, for almost anything in life! Even cleaning sometimes, lol
Be sure to post the news when learn the baby’s gender.
What surprises me is that my kids STILL surprise me. LOL My daughter is twenty and my son is sixteen. They both said and did things that amazed me when they were younger, but the surprises continue. The girl has turned out to be a much better money manager than I thought she’d ever be. And my son must be an old soul. He has much higher maturity level than most teenaged boys.
I’ll be sure to share Nita!
I’m glad to know that no matter how many years go by they’ll still surprise me!
You’re lucky to have a good money manager in your daughter, and a son who is so mature. Obviously you’re a good mommy
I so envy you all your beautiful and fun children. May you always be as close as you are today!
Aw, thank you Mary! I hope we are too
