Today, MamaWriters is pleased to welcome NY Times Bestselling author Brenda Novak, author of the fabulous The Last Stand series and the founder and all-around amazing woman who puts together the Annual Online Auction for Diabetes Research each May. (For which MamaWriters has donated an Amazon Kindle 2.0. Check it out!)

BRENDA NOVAK
The COUNTDOWN has begun….
I’m SO excited! My 5th Annual Online Auction for Diabetes Research begins May 1st (at brendanovak.com) and it has over 2,000 fabulous items, many of which you can’t get anywhere else.
I started this fundraiser in 2005 and have made it an annual event in an attempt to help my twelve-year-old son (diagnosed at 5) and the many, many others who struggle with diabetes. The need is there. Anyone who lives with a diabetic will tell you about the constant fingertip pricks, the shots, the pump insertions, the danger that comes with blood sugars that are too high or too low or swinging wildly from one side to the other. It’s almost impossible to avoid this, no matter how hard you try. But you rarely hear about that, or about the tragic side affects. Diabetes affects every part of the body—the heart, the liver, the kidneys, the skin, the nerves, the eyes, etc. Thanks to my many, many generous donors, we’re doing what we can to help!
Last year we managed to raise over $250,000. In 2009 we’re shooting for $300,000. And judging by the increase in donations and web traffic, I think we’ll get there. Not only do I offer fabulous items like original paintings, handmade quilts, trips and stays and autographed books and baskets from Big Name authors, I offer fabulous opportunities. How would you like to have lunch with one of your favorite authors—authors like Barry Eisler or Janet Evanovich? John Lescroart is offering an opportunity to name a character in his next novel. Anne Stuart is offering quilt she’s made herself. Heather Graham is offering a fabulous trip to New Orlean, which includes a writer’s conference. Jane Porter is offering an amazing trip to Seattle that includes a ton of extra goodies. Nora Roberts is offering the chance to stay at her inn. And author Tom Gabbay offers a one-week stay for 2 in an apartment at Villa Sofia in Barga, Tuscany (Italy). Or maybe you’d like to bid on the baseball autographed by President Obama. What a chance to own a piece of history! Actually, there are too many items to list here, so you’ll have to hop over and check it out.
For those of you who have never participated in an online auction, don’t worry–it’s easy. This auction runs just like E-Bay. You shop the entire month of May (there are also one-day auctions going on each day so be sure to check the schedule), bid on whatever you like and pay for what you win via credit card when it’s all over, at which point it will be shipped to you (in most cases, the shipping is free). The person who places the highest number of bids over all, even if that person doesn’t win a single item, will be awarded an amazing prize package that includes a brand new giant touch screen Hewlett Packard computer (the one where they’ve done away with the tower and is completely wireless), as well as an Advanced Reading Copy of my new book, THE PERFECT COUPLE, due out July 28th.
And we have something new this year. I’m going to be posting random $1 Buy it Now items (in no particular category). Some of these items will be extremely valuable, but after I post one, if you’re the first to find it, you’ll get to buy it for a buck! These will include evaluations by top agents and editors (one by my own agent, Kim Whalen at Trident Media Group). Other $1 Buy it Now items will be jewelry, gift certificates, autographed books, etc. It’ll be like going on an Easter Egg hunt. I’m all for making you feel like a kid again. J
One other thing I should mention. To help promote the auction, I’m currently holding a drawing for a fabulous Trip for 2 to Sonoma, California (wine country). This trip includes airfare and hotel stay. To enter, visit brendanovak.com and click on the Contest link.
Here’s hoping I see you at the auction!

Brenda, this is an amazing venture you’ve undertaken – both for your son, and the cause. The auction sounds like so much fun! The Sonoma trip is a fabulous prize. Wow. (having been there, it’s an AMAZING place – wonderful wines, great local!
I’m curious how you’ve seen your charity grow from your first fledgling efforts five years ago into this wonderful event. Congratulations on your successes — both in publishing, and with your charity.

Hi Ashley–
Thanks for your post. I’m amazed by the growth I’ve seen with the auction. My first year I raised only $34,000. The second year, that figure nearly double and so on until last year (the 4th year), I raised $252,300. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all the donors and shoppers who pitch in every year. It’s a “coming together” of so many. And the agents and editors who donate are particularly generous.
I hope to see you there!
Brenda
Such a wonderful and positive approach to something that affects so many people. I have three family members with type 2 diabetes.
I love the idea and will do what I can to contribute
Hi Tricia–
Thanks for dropping by. Diabetes does affect a lot of people. It’s the fifth deadliest killer. A lot of times people will die of a heart attack and everyone says they died of a heart attack, but it was actually caused by diabetes.
I’m glad you’re planning to participate in the auction. Every bid helps.

There are so many amazing items in this year’s auction! I’m having such a difficult time choosing the ones to bid on.
And those Buy for a Buck items!! Including AGENT reads? WOW…. I think I may do nothing but roam the auction pages for the month of May to find them.
Good for you, Brenda. I’ll be sure and stop by and see what I can pick up. I’ve never been to an on-line auction.

Catherine, you’ll LOVE it. It’s lot of fun not only to bid on what you want, but also watch the other items and see how high they go! LOL
There is stuff for every price range, too, from autographed books to trips. Definitely something for everyone.
And hey– Xmas shopping early!!! For the book lovers you know, this is like a 5 year old’s Christmas dream. LOL
What a great thing you are doing for your son and so many others. Not just raising money but raising awareness.
Kudos to you!
I’ve already seen some things I’ll be bidding on
Cheers!
Eliza
Hi Brenda and all, You might want to check out the barbwire wreath I donated. I plan on bidding on things as well. What a great way to raise money for a great cause!
Hi Jeannie–
I wish I could bid in my own auction! LOL I want that Marilyn Sears Bourbon painting. She is simply amazing (I know, I already have three but I want this one, too!). I also want Anna Stewart’s miniature bookstore. It is SO cute. The picture definitely doesn’t do that justice.
And, yes, the $1 items will also include some agent and editor reads. I got the idea from all the people saying they thought they wouldn’t be able to afford it. Well, these will be the price of a candy bar. LOL
Brenda
Catherine–
It’s super easy–just like E-Bay. Jeannie has been helping me automate some of the processes, and that’s going to make it run even smoother. Way to go, Jeannie!
Definitely check it out. And for those planning to win the grand prize, the secret is to start bidding early.
Brenda
Hi Eliza–
I’m glad you’ve already made your list. With over 2,000 items, there’s a lot to see.
Someone mentioned gifts. Doing your gift shopping here is a great idea. Where else can you get such a unique gift as “Name a Character in John Lescroart’s Next Book?”
Brenda
Paty–
Your wreath looks amazing. I love it when people donate something they’ve made. Makes it so personal, you know? Anne Stuart does a quilt every year, which is also wonderful.

Hi Brenda,
Thanks so much for all that you do for diabetes research. My father has been a Type 1 diabetic for most of his life. I’ve witnessed him struggle with all the frustrations that you mentioned and then some. I’m incredibly thankful he’s still alive and healthy as can be. This is a great cause.
I’m happy your father is doing so well, Voila. That’s encouraging to a mother of a diabetic!
Tell him to get plenty of exercise!

I’ve been saving my money all year, Brenda! Last year’s auction was a blast and I won two amazing critiques. I’m lucky enough to included in Jeannie Ruesch’s “group basket” for this year, so I get to give a little back. I really need to dig out my password and start making my list!
Thank you so much for doing this!
Hi Brenda,
This looks like sooooo much fun. I have never participated in an on-line auction, either. I am going to try it! (I have diabetes, too.)
This is a big undertaking for you, I can only imagine! And the prizes are so different and so fabulous. I love the idea of the $1 prizes, too.
Cheryl
Hi Silver–
I’m so glad you were happy with what you won last year.
You should definitely get started with that list. The amount of items is a bit overwhelming this year. LOL
Thanks for coming back!
Brenda
Hi Cheryl–
This is a big undertaking–something that takes all year. But it’s really fulfilling and so exciting when it “works,” you know? I never dreamed it would grow so big so fast, but now I’m hoping to turn it into a $1 million per year fundraiser. Why not shoot big, eh? LOL
I’m glad you’re going to give it a try. Please email me if you have any questions.
Brenda
By the way, Silver, thanks so much for contributing on the donation side, too. I couldn’t do this without such great items!
Brenda
Hey Brenda!
Sorry that I didn’t get by earlier but I’ve had “one of those days”. Just found out that Brooke’s pump has been discontinued and we have to change insulin pumps! Argh! Ugh! And did I mention…Doh!
In case ya’ll didn’t know, my daughter Brooke (age
has been diagnosed with juvenile diabetes since age 2. She’s an incredible girl and doesn’t let this awful disease ever break her spirit.
I adore Brenda for all that she has done to help raise money for research for a cure. Insulin is NOT a cure…it is just a life support system.
I’ve been participating in this auction since the first year. Originally, as a buyer only and then as a contributor as well. This year I’m donating a Custom Made Book Trailer.
Hope some of the MammaWriters will bid on it!
Hope all is well with you Brenda & Thad!
My love,
Kerri
My husband is diabetic and the one thing that really bothered me was that when I contacted the diabetic association, all they did was ask me for money.
No help, no suggestion, what you are doing is just wonderful!
Brenda,
Thank you so much for blogging with us at MW! I am really looking forward to the auction this year. In fact, I already have my list together for it!
This is such a difficult disease and I”m so glad you have decided to face it head on and do something proactive about it.
Renee
Hi Kerri–Sorry to hear about the hassle’s with Brooke’s pump. Thad is in the process of getting a new one, too. This time we’re going with a continuous monitor. He’s not too happy about it. He says, “I don’t want to wear TWO dork-o-meters.” LOL He’s 12…what can I say?
Thanks for supporting the auction again. It’s already opening. I can hardly believe the time has come…
Thanks, Renee. I’m so glad you’ll be at the auction.
Isn’t it crazy, Mary? Once you get on their list you’ll get tons of those requests. That’s what I like about the auction. Your money goes to a good cause but it’s lots more fun that merely sending a check.
Here’s to a cure! And thanks for having me!
Brenda
