The Sky is Falling !!!

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Yes sir, Chicken Little and I have had an awful lot in common recently…

On Sunday afternoon, I returned home from five days in Orlando at the Romantic Times Convention – a totally fun, totally exciting whirlwind of an experience!  Friday I head out for two days at Colorado Romance Writers’ Romancing the Rockies conference.  I’m facing a deadline for the next book that’s literally plunging right at me [who knew weeks could go by so fast???], and I still haven’t sent out those darn invitations for my son’s high school graduation!!  *gulp*  It would be easy to let myself slip over into panic mode right about now…

But I don’t.  Know why not?

Because, just like CL, I have friends.  But unlike him, I’ve learned to listen to mine!  All these wonderful fellow writers are only an email away, ready and willing to pull me back from the edge.  Or at the very least, ready to tell me to quit whining,  pull up my big girl panties and get back to work!

When my children were little, I frequently sought out other mommies to compare notes on just about everything from bad behavior to foods to tempt kids to teething to… well, you name it.  Being a mama can be a pretty isolated job, spending your days with little people who can’t always express their needs and sure aren’t into discussing yours!  Connecting to other moms can be a lifeline.  It can be wholly reassuring to hear that other moms go through the same things you do.  Besides, you share that bond of working toward raising the happiest, most well-adjusted children you can in the face of any adversity!

Being a writer is a pretty isolated job, too.  I spend my days with characters who sometimes refuse to talk to me at all…and even when they do, they’re all in my head!  Just as I depended on the sage advice and fellowship of other mommies when I was raising my little ones,   I now depend on my fellow writers.  We share the bond of trying to produce the best, most interesting books we possibly can in the face of, well, everything else in our lives!

So, unlike Chicken Little, I know my sky isn’t really falling.  I know I’m one of the luckiest women in the world because my sky is filled with all those twinkling stars — all the writers [and MamaWriters!] I’m honored to call friends.

What about you?  What pulls you back from the edge when you feeling the stress building?

Welcome Special Guest, NY Times Bestselling author Brenda Novak

Today, MamaWriters is pleased to welcome NY Times Bestselling author Brenda Novak, author of the fabulous The Last Stand series and the founder and all-around amazing woman who puts together the Annual Online Auction for Diabetes Research each May.   (For which MamaWriters has donated an Amazon Kindle 2.0. Check it out!)

BRENDA NOVAK

The COUNTDOWN has begun….

I’m SO excited! My 5th Annual Online Auction for Diabetes Research begins May 1st (at brendanovak.com) and it has over 2,000 fabulous items, many of which you can’t get anywhere else.

I started this fundraiser in 2005 and have made it an annual event in an attempt to help my twelve-year-old son (diagnosed at 5) and the many, many others who struggle with diabetes. The need is there. Anyone who lives with a diabetic will tell you about the constant fingertip pricks, the shots, the pump insertions, the danger that comes with blood sugars that are too high or too low or swinging wildly from one side to the other. It’s almost impossible to avoid this, no matter how hard you try. But you rarely hear about that, or about the tragic side affects. Diabetes affects every part of the body—the heart, the liver, the kidneys, the skin, the nerves, the eyes, etc. Thanks to my many, many generous donors, we’re doing what we can to help!

Last year we managed to raise over $250,000. In 2009 we’re shooting for $300,000. And judging by the increase in donations and web traffic, I think we’ll get there. Not only do I offer fabulous items like original paintings, handmade quilts, trips and stays and autographed books and baskets from Big Name authors, I offer fabulous opportunities. How would you like to have lunch with one of your favorite authors—authors like Barry Eisler or Janet Evanovich? John Lescroart is offering an opportunity to name a character in his next novel. Anne Stuart is offering quilt she’s made herself. Heather Graham is offering a fabulous trip to New Orlean, which includes a writer’s conference. Jane Porter is offering an amazing trip to Seattle that includes a ton of extra goodies. Nora Roberts is offering the chance to stay at her inn. And author Tom Gabbay offers a one-week stay for 2 in an apartment at Villa Sofia in Barga, Tuscany (Italy). Or maybe you’d like to bid on the baseball autographed by President Obama. What a chance to own a piece of history! Actually, there are too many items to list here, so you’ll have to hop over and check it out.

cover_perfectcouple125For those of you who have never participated in an online auction, don’t worry–it’s easy. This auction runs just like E-Bay. You shop the entire month of May (there are also one-day auctions going on each day so be sure to check the schedule), bid on whatever you like and pay for what you win via  credit card when it’s all over, at which point it will be shipped to you (in most cases, the shipping is free). The person who places the highest number of bids over all, even if that person doesn’t win a single item, will be awarded an amazing prize package that includes a brand new giant touch screen Hewlett Packard computer (the one where they’ve done away with the tower and is completely wireless), as well as an Advanced Reading Copy of my new book, THE PERFECT COUPLE, due out July 28th.

sonoma And we have something new this year. I’m going to be posting random $1 Buy it Now items (in no particular category). Some of these items will be extremely valuable, but after I post one, if you’re the first to find it, you’ll get to buy it for a buck! These will include evaluations by top agents and editors (one by my own agent, Kim Whalen at Trident Media Group). Other $1 Buy it Now items will be jewelry, gift certificates, autographed books, etc. It’ll be like going on an Easter Egg hunt. I’m all for making you feel like a kid again. J

One other thing I should mention. To help promote the auction, I’m currently holding a drawing for a fabulous Trip for 2 to Sonoma, California (wine country). This trip includes airfare and hotel stay. To enter, visit brendanovak.com and click on the Contest link.

Here’s hoping I see you at the auction!

More Spring Cleaning

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Amazing what a little spring cleaning can do.  Not only is my house almost put back together after a lengthy haul of a few rooms.  We are decluttering, recycling and donating vs simply just moving things around or hiding them somewhere else LOL.  But it’s almost as if the clearing and lugging boxes and packing things up to donate and brushing away the cobwebs have spring cleaned my mind as well.

Maybe it’s the darkness of winter but it’s like we hord the bad moods and all the stuff inside until the sunshine creeps through the window and that little streak of light grows and grows and grows and we can truly see once again.

I love spring!

Of course in our house, it means the boys are outside almost twenty-four-seven playing baseball or whatever else hits their fancy.  I come from very pale genes so it’s to see them get some color again too LOL.

And now that my mind seems clear or the heavy mood seems to be lifted, my writing changes too.  It’s easier to find the plot threads and the tangled web of subtlies needed to bring the whole story together.  New ideas pop up not just for stories but for the writing process as well.  I’ve been working at that lately as you’ll see on my blog as I’ve been plotting my progress there lately.  Oh, and I have more spring cleaning over there too at www.stacydawn.blogspot.com where I’ve cleaned out some of my promo baskets and am giving away a couple special treats.

What does spring cleaning do for you?  Do find your writing is closely affected to what goes on in your home too?  Did you declutter or just move around LOL?

It’s time for *me time!*

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Me time? What’s that???

My time has come around once again to post an entry on the MamaWriter’s Blog. And, just like last month, I’m late.

I’ve come to realize “me time” is not something we writers take time out for. When was the last time you went for a walk, just you? Or poured yourself a glass of wine and watched a chick flick? When was the last time you had a spare moment and you didn’t go running to your computer to sneak in some writing before anyone discovered your whereabouts? If you’re like me, your “me time” is eaten up immediately by your characters. Even your sleep is invaded by your characters, those selfish fictional beings. We dream about our characters, solve dilemmas in our stories we sometimes didn’t even know we had. When we want to run to the computer and jot them down before we forget, we are blind-sided by our daily tasks.

There is our morning routine and shooing the kids off to school, making coffee, breakfast (if you have time!), and then it is off to your day job. Once the emergencies and fires have all been dealt with at work, it’s time for lunch. Instead of spending a little “me time”, your characters refuse to leave you alone, so you pull out your trusty USB drive and plug it into the computer. “I’ll only write for half an hour, then I’ll go grab a bite to eat,” you tell yourself. So you are just about to type out the solution to their dilemma, but then you get an urgent call. Someone from Dept. X needs something that only you can do–and they need it in the next hour. You take the USB drive back out of the computer and drop it into your purse once again. No lunch for you as you complete the task requested of you during your lunch hour. Then you have a whole new set of emergencies and fires to deal with that take up the rest of your afternoon. Quitting time comes and goes, and you are still at the office.

Finally you reach a stopping point and hurry home to scrounge something up for dinner. After your teenagers complain about what you made and everyone eats it anyway, you then clean off the table and clean the kitchen. You finally have time to get that solution written so you scurry away before anyone notices and stick your USB drive into your computer. You even get as far as opening up your document when the questions start.

“Mom, where’s my pencil?”
“Mom, do we have any lined paper?”
“Honey, why’s the dog throwing up?”

You spend the next hour finding a pencil, all the lined paper in the house, and cleaning up dog puke. Ahhh… Bedtime for kids. You make sure their homework is done and then you argue with them for the next 20 minutes about their bedtime. Once they go to bed, you take a breath and head back to your computer. Oh, wait. Here comes hubby wanting some attention. So you set your story aside for a little QT with the DH.

Now it’s your bedtime. But wait! You still haven’t gotten that solution down in writing. You tell your DH you’ll be to bed in a bit and sit down to finally write. Not only does the solution evade you at this point, but you’ve got writer’s block. Thus is the life of the busy mama. It sounds hectic, I know. But it doesn’t have to be.

As a writer, and a mother, and a wife, and a woman with a full-time job in a profession dominated by men, I often–if not always–put others ahead of myself. I’ve come to realize, however, that if I’m not happy then my family isn’t happy. If I don’t get some “me time,” I’m one cranky girl. I often write about balance. When you are a writer, your stories demand a lot of your attention. You have to find the time to write or I’m a firm believer that you will go insane. My family understands that. If I need time to write, I let the family know they are on their own for dinner (fend for yourself night is what we call it), or I tell the DH he gets me all day on Sunday, but I get me all day Saturday. I negotiate my time with my family. They sometimes fight it, and they sometimes should. But don’t you forget to fight for your “me time.” You deserve it, and your family deserves to have a happy mama.

Welcome Special Guest, Malena Lott!

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Today MW welcomes writer of sassy and sexy fiction, Malena Lott. Malena’s current release, Dating Da Vinci, is a fabulous story of sexual reawakening and the journey back to one’s self after the loss of a spouse. (By the way, I just finished Dating Da Vinci and I wholeheartedly recommend it!)

Let’s Run Away Together by Malena Lott

As a mom, don’t you sometimes dream of running away? Even for just one night? For those of us who have obsessive Calgon Take Me Away moments, we’re in luck. Thursday, May 7th is National Mom’s Nite Out, so not only do we get to get out and enjoy some food and drinks with other mommies, we’re SUPPOSED TO! It’s like, our civic duty or something.

I love the idea of moms uniting, especially when it’s not at the school. While I myself am a begrudging volunteer at the elementary school, I feel I MUST do a few things per year, even if I whine about it to my hubby before and after. Like, why the HELL did I sign up to make a cobbler for the Oklahoma Land Run day this Friday? I haven’t eaten a cobbler in years, let alone ever made one. Brain, please connect to stem.

Confession: I’m not a with-it mom. I’m embarrassed to admit my 4 year old showed up at school on picture day wearing his CALL ME I’M BETWEEN MOVIES T-shirt and his mop of a head was two months past due for a cut. I told the teachers that I forgot, and they just smiled. They smiled at me the same way the week before when I arrived with the “salty snack” for the Easter party but FORGOT the damn Easter basket filled with eggs for the hunt.

Teacher: Oh, he can use a sack then.

Me: Er, no. A sack for my precious baby?!

Luckily, I live two minutes from the school and scrounged up an Easter basket (spiderwebs hence removed), and had plastic eggs and candy to finish it out. SCORE!datingdavinci_Final_CVR:Layout 1

So, yeah, maybe I don’t deserve a Mom of the Year badge, but we all know parenting is tough business and moms should be rewarded beyond one day of the year (Mother’s Day is May 10th and I’m sure I’ll make a nice brunch for everyone!) I LOVE the idea of National Moms Nite Out where businesses can show their love, as they should since the women of the household make nearly 90% of all household decisions. (We only let our husbands THINK they are making the final decision.) ☺

Now a few goodies for you, fellow mommies! 1. You can enter my Spring Fling contest for a chance to win a tote bag full of books by commenting on one of my spring blog entries over at www.malenalott.com. 2. Register for a chance to win a GAS CARD over at www.roadtripjournal.com on the monthly survey. If you want to vote for my Route 66 blog entry, I’d mucho appreciate it. 3. Grab the fun Flirtini recipe off my recipe page on my web site to make them for your next Girls Night In.

Find out more about Moms Nite Out at momsniteout.com to see if one is already scheduled in your area or consider hosting a house party!

Wishing you la dolce vita! The sweet life.
